How bad did I mess up?

Accidentally started my 4Runner with the gas pedal floored. Engine cranked over, started and immediately revved to about 5k rpm. I had driven the car and got it up to operating temperature and then the car sat for about 15 minutes prior to me doing this 5k rpm startup. Do you think I could have done any damage?

 

Your engine is completely destroyed and will fail in 2 to 3 days.

Your only recourse is to sell the truck to me for $5000.

No. You already had the oil warmed up some and got it circulated around just a few minutes before.

 

It should be OK. It wasn't a cold start and 5K isn't horribly high. I'm kind of surprised it started though. With Subaru's, the oil filter is inverted so you can't pre fill them when you do an oil change. In order to get the oil to fill the filter after a change you can floor the accelerator and crank the engine. It will not start but cranking it sends oil through the engine and fills the filter. I do it all the tome on my Forester and my daughter's WRX.

 

Yeah me too! That’s actually what I was trying to do! I thought it would be beneficial for my next oil change so I attempted to start it in what’s called “clear flood mode” but instead failed miserably and about gave the lady next to me a heart attack. I held the brake and the gas while pushing the start button and it’s possible I did something wrong or the car just doesn’t have that feature. I was terribly concerned that I just grenaded my brand new 4Runner. Glad to hear that it’s likely I didn’t do anything damage. First new car I’ve ever owned so I’m a little paranoid about taking care of it.

You're fine. Mine was completely cold (at about 55 degrees) when I made this gaffe. You kept the RPM's lower than me, I bounced it off of the rev limiter.

 

You’ve done something similar? How many miles have you put on it since doing so?

 

I did something very similar with my '03 right after I bought it (used with about 78K miles). I traded that one in with 257K and no issues.

 

You have no idea just how robust this engine is.

I literally would not worry about it.

But I’ll still take it off your hands if you’re worried.

Yeah you’re right, this is my first 4Runner so I have no idea how robust they are. I was mostly concerned that the engine didn’t have enough oil pressure built up by the time it reached higher rpm. I’ll take your word for it though and carry on!

 

If you ever go wheeling with my friends you'll see people with 250k miles on their 15 year old 4.0L bouncing them off the rev limiter.

Good idea? No. But then again we named our group hack jobs and slow learners, so that should warn you about us right there.

It's fine. We are 50x meaner to some of our 200k+ rigs and they don't care.

Probably 17k and it still burns zero oil between 7k changes. You're fine, I'm fine, we're ALL fine with this issue on these motors.
