Went on a trip of 2100 mi, the best mileage I got was 21.9 MPG and averaged right at 20.5 MPG using Falken Wildpeak AT3's. Using the fill up and then refill mileage divided by gallons consumed method. 2022 Off Road

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
I'm also running stock size Wildpeaks and on long, all highway trips I get around 20 MPG depending on how loaded down the Runner is. Best I ever got was average of 20.2.

I could get over 20 when I was still on stock size tires. If you keep your speed reasonable, it's not hard.

32 if stock size and load range.

For stock size LT tires, 44 is recommended, but I ran 35 and got good wear. If you do this, though, I would bump up the pressure if I were loaded heavy.

I currently run 30 to 32, but I am running 295/70/17 mud tires.

Usually 32 but the last trip I made I was carrying a lot of weight so I went up to 35.

I just got back from a 650 mile trip from my place on the RI coast to eastern Pennsylvania and back. Stock 2019 TRD PRO, 43k miles, with RSG rock sliders. The wife and I, a couple of suitcases and gear, Thule hitch rack with two bikes on the back. Kept it at 70mph or below for the trip. Very hilly and mountainous in eastern PA. 34psi in the stock nittos. Averaged 21.8 for the trip, which I find pretty amazing for a vehicle like this. I have a sprint booster installed which greatly improves the drivability, especially in the mountains. Keeping it below 70 makes all the difference. Mileage drops off drastically if you like to go 80. But I'm old now and perfectly happy cruising along at 65-70mph. So, on regular gas, that's pretty good. Price difference for premium is currently 18.5% locally. So, if I had a new Bronco with it's modern powertrain and 10 speed auto, I'd need to get 25.8mpg, running premium, to equal what I got in the 4Runner with its archaic powertrain. I'm guessing you can't get 26mpg in the Bronco.

Stock-ish 4Runner, and <70 MPH. No problem. I've gotten over 20 a bunch of times when I was on stock size tires. I've gotten 19.9 on 295 MT's.

Yes. Confirmed it with my own calculations. My dash readout is pretty spot on. Without the bikes on the back, prob would have hit 22mpg. Flat where I'm from but very hilly in PA. Same trip in my previous off road premium averaged 22.9 mpg.

Yes, the key is keeping it between 65-70. If I drove 80, I prob would have averaged 18 or less. Also, this is obviously summer blend fuel. My mileage in the winter is not as good.

Yeah, my current setup gets like 12 at 80, but can get 17 at 60.

Aside from the winter gas, cold weather increases rolling resistance and wind resistance. Winter fuel economy is like an oxymoron. :D

You'll never see 20 if you're going over 70-75 mph. It's all about driving habits, and environment.

My new 2022 ORP with 700 MILES on it at the start of my summer family vacation with 3 people with a total weight of 500 LBS and a small cooler for drinks and luggage that was 75 LBS we got around 14 MPG doing 85MPH . This is out west on I-84 and I-15 where the speed limit is 80MPH and the Semi-trucks are doing 85MPH so you will get ran over if you are not doing 85MPH. I have BFG K2O load range C 265/70/17 stock size with 38 PSI. I wasn't flooring the gas pedal when passing the RV's doing 75MPH or getting up to speed on the 4Runner and was trying to use the cruise control but is was constantly down shifting to 4th gear. I didn't buy this for MPG so I am not bitching but I am writing this to try and help someone if they are wanting this great 4x4 and are wanting good fuel mileage.

It's easy if you don't drive like a moron. I frequently get over 21 or even 22 on road trips with mine.

Where do you live and drive? I also drove back to Idaho from Nevada on a two lane road via ID-51 S and NV-225 S and the speed limit is 70 MPH and we got 15MPG doing 70 MPH . If you are suggesting that I should be doing 55 MPH on a 80 MPH freeway---> I can guarantee you are the Moron and you would be the danger on the road.

Cruise actually makes it worse at higher speeds.

15 MPG at 70 seems kinda low. Do you have a roof rack?

We got the adventure black package and it does come with a Yakama roof basket. I wanted to take it off before the trip but I am just recovering from a back surgery and my wife was worried about me hurting it right before a 10 day vacation. I also wanted to see what MPG would be like with the (empty) basket and what it will be like after taking it off. We really will only use the basket once a year when we go to a cabin later this fall.
We love our new 4RUNNER and didn't buy it for fuel mileage but I did hope we could get at least 17 MPG.
The cruise control wasn't usable for me out on the interstate because it would kick down to 4th within seconds of putting it on. I don't mind using it once and a while because my back problem makes my right leg hurt and being able to stop pushing the gas pedal every 15 minutes was nice in our last vehicle but I am not one to just put cruise on for hours at a time so it isn't that big of a deal that it isn't usable on the 80MPH type roads I drive on.
I have taken off the roof basket and I am hoping that pumping up the tires to 42 PSI on our next trip to see my daughter at college will help the MPG.
I only responded to this message thread to help someone who is thinking about buying a new 4Runner and they must have good MPG. The 4Runner just isn't that type of 4x4 and to those who are getting 20 to 22.9 MPG out on the open highway I am happy for them.

Don't overinflate the tires for fuel economy. The loss of tread life and traction isn't worth it.

True. Fuel economy will never be great with these.

I live in Rhode Island and frequently travel throughout New England. Most of the highway in Rhode Island is in fact 55 mph speed limit. If I'm heading up north, I'll typically do about 70.

I work in Mass, so I'm on the highway everyday for about 45 mi. On my way to and from work I'm not in a hurry, I just sit over in the right lane and set the cruise at 65 and enjoy whatever podcast I'm listening to.

I reset the fuel economy reading a few weeks after I got this, and haven't touched it since. Over 60,000 miles I'm at 20.2 avg.

It's not just about what speed you're at on the highway, it's also how heavy or light you are on the accelerator. I don't race people to beat them off the exit, I don't try to cut in front of people when merging. It's easier and less stressful to just fall in behind people or let them get ahead of me.

Typically on my commute to work I'll see people driving like total aggressive ass hats, and then a few minutes later we'll be next to each other at the same light.

My last fill up, I got 20 MPG (hand calculated) mostly highway and some dirt road driving which is the best so far. I have about 700 miles on the ORP.

I haven’t had the chance yet for an extended highway trip with my new 265’s, but I’m now getting 19+ city driving.

Keeping the speed reasonable on the highway is key for decent fuel mileage. Easier to do for us old farts. ;)

My wife gets 19-19.75 on our LT's inflated to 38 psi. most of the time during her commute to work and some errands, when we go for a cruise we see a little over 20 mpg. The LT's are heavy, I believe when running a heavy tire they're more sensitive to inflation psi. This is something we've trialed and errored over the past couple years. Ther's so many variables to get good mileage. When we first got the 4Runner I bet 18 mpg was at the top end. Winter in rural Wisconsin.... that's another story!

A 2020 SR5 w/street tires (Bridgestone Dueler HT) driving highways at 60mph I achieved record gas mileage. I should be awarded a trophy?20220622_111005_HDR.jpg

Did you compare it to your actual gallons VS miles? Just curious.

I can totally see it getting 25 in ideal conditions.

Just get ready for "Mine never got over XX, so that's not possible." :D

Yes and since I have owned the truck 2 years now the worst gas mileage I ever got was 18.5 mpg in the winter.
I rarely carry any cargo, no passengers, just myself commuting to work on the highway thats when I get these great gas readings.
City driving I'm down in the 18-20 mpg range. I do drive like an old man to conserve gas and I think I've done that well.
Not all 4 runner 's suck on gas folks!:D
I'm sure once I add AT tires ,the mpg will go down ,but for now I'm liking what I see.
