I’ve recently replaced my shift linkage myself and now you 2006 4 runner won’t turn off without unplugging the battery. The key comes out fine it just doesn’t turn to the off position. I’m a single mother trying to save money. And no one seems to know what’s going on

Are you talking about the linkage connected to the shifter in the center console? Like replacing the bushing or something?

    How did you replace it?

I took the covering off the gear shift and replaced the linkage bushing. And now it won’t turn off without unplugging the battery.

I replaced my entire shifter assembly (did not replace the bushing) but the steps would be nearly the same i would think. If I recall correctly, before replacing the assembly, a YouTube video i watched had me put the shifter into Neutral first, remove/replace assembly, and when putting the linkage back onto the shifter assembly (the video) had me like slightly push up (so like in neutral but pushed ever so slightly forward) on the shifter when connecting the linkage back and tightening it down.

I'm wondering if your car doesn't think its in park when you try to shut off the engine due to the linkage/transmission thinking its not in park.

This all goes without saying, i don't know if our cars are smart enough or have a check in place to tell the computer the car needs to be in park when shutting it off. Someone smarter than me will have to chime in on that aspect.

Does your car shift fine otherwise? Do the P/N/D/4/3/2 shifter lights follow the correct gear its in?

Did you forget to plug in any connectors that you may have removed during the install process?

The car should shut off regardless of what gear its in, well at least in my 2007 SR5 it did. Now to start its needa to be in park or neutral
