I have owned a 2005 4Runner Limited for almost 6 years. Mileage is 142,000. The struts (shocks) are worn and need to be replaced. A local Toyota dealer wants to charge me around $2500.00 to replace all 4, but mentioned the Xreas system may need work if it is failing and would be very expensive to fix. So I've read a few threads about eliminating the Xreas, and just install all new compatible struts (shocks). Will the vehicle handle well and be safe to drive on the road if I do this? I'm not an off roader............

Shocks and struts on a 4runner can last over 300,000 miles according to Scotty Kilmer. I have 2005 4runner with 150,000 miles. My shocks and struts are fine.

Take it to an alignment shop. If you do get them replaced I'd go with top of the line grade or OEM.

Television guru Scotty Kilmer has 50 years of hands on mechanic skills and over 1 million youtube views. Here’s Why I Got a Toyota RAV4 TRD - Bing video

PS. I own a Toyota 4runner 2005 - bought it new off the dealer lot. It is worth 2 times the price I paid for a brand new 1996 GMC JIMMY that rusted away and was sold for $800 10 years later.
    No rust on my Toyota!

Welcome! You won’t have any safety issues removing your xreas and putting something like a Bilstein 5100 kit on or an OME set. About $1000 for new shocks and springs. Find a good local shop not the stealership to do the work. Get an alignment after and you should be riding nice. Check out a website like Bilsteinlifts.com they have a lot of good stuff.
