If you have the MTM aka 360 camera system the quality is horrendous.

In all the years, in all the threads... I haven't seen a single viable solution to get true HD quality out of a head unit or camera upgrade.

Just get a wolfbox kit. It's true HD front and rear. You can even add a trail camera if you'd like. Oh, they also double as dash cameras. I was skeptical at first but I have a few friends running them and man they work great

Edit: I'm keeping my 360 camera's for parking in the daylight and adding the wolfbox for off road use. Front, Rear, Undercarriage

I have both of the backup cameras:
    1. The 21 Venture (rear-view only) which has excellent res but no 360.
    2. The 360 in my (wife's) 24 Limited. It's pathetic.

I've been round and round with the peeps at my dealership gritching about it and they "updated it" (total BS - the "update" really just gave them a pass to bill corporate for an hour and stare at it) which made zero (nada) difference.

I've looked at every option out there for my (her) 24' and every option I found was a total Frankenstein mod. I've now just resigned to the fact that it stinks and it is what it is. The thing that amazes me is why they couldn't at least get the rear facing view on the 360 as good as the rear facing view on the non-360. Again, I have both.

Too bad for us who are stuck with it.

Have you asked the dealer to flash you with the non technology package option? The technology package is what gave you the 360 view. If my camera stuff didnt fix ours, i was going to see if the dealer would delete the 360 cameras and just run the rear view camera.

Not a bad idea, and no I didn’t ask. If you do, please let us know if that’s possible.

So I guess the more expensive solution is a total replacement of the head unit and rear camera ?

The aftermarket head unit that looks like the OEM, i believe i have seen pictures of it replacing the OEM and having better camera quality. This was without having to replace the camera system.

I had HD and HDR. Was wicked cool. With HDR the sun could be in the camera and you could see fine. Worked really well at night.

That said I agree with you word choice if "viable"

Isnt there (2) head units that look like the OEM 2021+ system now? Dasatia is one, what about the other?

Theres hamilton motor company. But they have a rebranded china product which also falls under another name from a different reseller.

The pre 2021 4runner got a head unit from this style which looks stock. Probably this. 2021 and beyond has more a tesla style.

Im curious if theres any others

Upgraded my head unit to a Kenwood 10" touch screen and added a front camera. Which was a huge difference from the rear and it wasn't even an HD camera.

This is the way to go. I had one. My HD cameras looked AMAZING. sound was GREAT. it was fast. Clean. Intuitive. I got vetoed on it by the person I live with.

It kinda blocked the AC vents tho. I was looking at 9 inch versions from alpine to resolve that. Kenwood is amazing though.

Its more of a partial / half block. You get reduced air.

Trail Grid Pro is also a good source with custom 4Runner head units. Getting something from either them or Crutchfield and you will win with either company.

I upgraded my HU to the Kenwood DMX 958XR. It's an in dash model as opposed to the floating 10" model. Looks OEM and sounds great! I was able to keep the 360 camera but considering adding the Kenwood 720 HD backup camera. OEM backup camera with the new head unit is almost useless at night

Adding that camera is a difficult thing to do.

I epoxy'd it to the factory camera mount after cutting and modifying the mount. Just a heads up. it's not a direct replacement.

I was just going to try the license plate frame mount. Your project looks ambitious! How is the camera view after change? Any pics?

Here is is with a 10" kenwood before messing with the lines. The Kenwood had adjustable lines and was spot on.Picture quality was AMAZING and can utilize the HDR. This pic doesn't do it justice.

I went to a Dasaita who's lines I could not adjust and was pretty good. Picture quality was pretty darn good but would get washed out when the sun was hitting it.

I'm currently installing a Hamilton but I can't get to the settings and emailed them asking what the password is - so no feedback on that yet.

The Sony XAV-9500ES I had put in only covers the bottom portion of the vents. After driving it over a year it's fine. I have the original back up camera hooked up to it so about the same as before just on a bigger screen.

I have the same head-unit on my ’19 limited, it doesn’t interfere with the use of the climate control; however, I have to drop my head down to see the temp readout which is not an issue. Still a great upgrade from the factory JBL and would do it again in a heartbeat.
