Yes if you have any windows open even partially it will give you a beep. The moonroof will give you a beep if it's cracked open.

Mods? None. Been there, done that. I like this one stock.
I've had mine for about 5 weeks. A bit of history since I'm an old geezer. Been driving various Jeeps for 40 years as weekend toys and the last one, '16 Wrangler Willys, was a DD since new. Went on vacation out west and rented a 4-Runner for a week...loved it but at the time, I told my wife I thought it was a bit underpowered. Got home started researching and found out about the new hybrid. Took one for a ride and the difference was enough to convince me to buy one. Traded the Wrangler and got the Toy. Bought it the last day of September, last day of the month, last day of their quarter, think I did OK on the trade.

The difference between the Jeep and the Toy is amazing. 4-Runner is so quiet and smooth riding, night and day. Jeeps come with a lot of wind noise, standard on all of them.

I have about 1,200 miles on it (including a 500 mile RT to Michigan) and so far, it has not disappointed. Smooth, quick (that hybrid really helps, a lot), more options than I'll ever know what to do with. No complaints at all. Mileage (not that I care but am interested) is about 21 so far. I expect it to increase a bit when broken in. The hybrid rear storage is a bit less than non-hybrid (tall floor, batteries under) but if I need to carry much I use my 2001 GMC Z71 PU, I love that thing, only 100K miles and not a bit of rust.

Overall, I can't think of any negatives. It does shift quite a bit but that's the design, not a problem, but different. So far, glad I bought it. I'm not into serious off-roading anymore, been there, done that, but I do need 4WD for the 160 acre farm. I like the rear diff lock button. I'll get it in some farm mud before long and I expect it to do as well as the Jeep. What's amazing are the 110 AC volts outlets. 2,400 Watts! I can run my house Freezer and Fridge and the gas furnace in an emergency. I understand that when using those outlets that when the battery starts to run down, the car will start up by itself to charge. Hopefully won't have to find out.

    Cheers!

Beautiful! You will soon discover the joy of drinking coffee in your Forerunner and then when you get to work you won't have to change your shirt. That's always been my experience in the Jeeps that I've ridden in! Congrats you picked a good one

Oh brother, yes I have. Just purchased my 3rd 4Runner, a 6th Gen Off Road Premium. The drive is smooth much like my '00 SR5 but so much better. I have the hybrid, turbo charged IForceMax. Loads of power and a smooth ride. I thought my 3rd Gen was the best until I got this one. If you want power, get the hybrid version with turbo charged. Was looking at the Land Cruiser and Lexus GX but happy I kept in the 4Runner family.

I would agree, I had the Third, fifth and now the 6th generation. I opted for the TRD orp in the gasoline only package.

I went down that road before with a new Mercedes that had the mild hybrid. Basically is the same thing as the new 4Runner it has a big lithium battery and an electric engine to pretty much just give you power on acceleration but once you hit the highway speeds it's a petrol engine. The mileage gain is very minimal and not worth the complexity and weight also the loss of rear hatch space for my daily usage. Just my personal feelings.

Probably helpful with the hybrid if you're pulling a trailer that's meets the limits of this 6th; Its not that much with a loaded trailer. you're really confined to a smaller type trailer once all of your combined add-on weights are calculated.

So that is how I sliced and diced my experience with the mild hybrid type of drivetrains. I would say if you're not pulling anything with extra added weight and your not impatient in your driving, then the standard gas/turbo drivetrain might be for you.

Oh, one other add-on the hybrid version does give you that huge inverter power which can power quite a few things. I really like that feature.

I noticed something recently that puzzled me until tonight. On the rear of the vehicle, there are 2 small lights under the rear hatch handle that shine on the license plate so it’s visible at night. But I noticed recently there was a third light to the left of the license plate light closest to the driver’s side. When you turn the vehicle off, the license plate lights go off but the third light stays on. It finally hit me tonight that this light would shine on anybody trying to approach the driver’s door from the rear. Nice touch.

    I don't believe it's a lithium battery, much safer.

Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) is the type of hybrid battery in the 2025 Toyota 4Runner with the i-FORCE MAX engine. This 1.87 kWh NiMH battery pack powers a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission, providing a total system output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Toyota uses NiMH in this parallel hybrid setup for its reliability in various temperatures, cost-effectiveness, and proven durability in non-plug-in hybrids, unlike the lithium-ion batteries in their plug-in models. This is consistent with other i-FORCE MAX applications, such as the 2024 Tacoma and 2022 Tundra hybrids.

Mods? None. Been there, done that. I like this one stock.
As mentioned above, it is a NiMH battery. I've got about 2K miles on mine (first 4R) and gas mileage is about 22-23, mostly surface streets, minor amount of freeway. Don't know much about mileage on previous models.

But, I'm thinking that your comparison to the Merc re: additional power maybe be correct. I think the power difference is very noticeable trying to merge or get out into traffic or passing; haven't/won't tow with it since I have an old Pickup for that.

But I'm thinking that this is more the reason that Toy went this way, not for mileage but for additional power (plus it caters to the Polar Bear friendly crowd so they can tell their eco-friends at the fossil fuel protests that they drive a hybrid). Put in a small turbo I4 and have the hybrid for additional power, and it works well, IMO. Makes me wonder if more car manufacturers will be going this same route and that getting a gas-only model of anything in the future will become a thing of the past? Small gas engine for cruise speed and, when needed, the elec for acceleration/additional power. Kinda makes sense.

That engine sound sure is different!

There seems to be a lot of suspension clunking going on though. Seems a little odd since he seems to be driving it pretty gently.

The Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter’s Snorkel Isn’t Even a Snorkel, So Be Careful

    It’s a “high-mount air intake.” ;)

I know others have mentioned it in the article but I am also chuckling at the fact that the "Trailhunter" has a high mounted air intake but not a snorkel, someone you would think is useful for a vehicle that is supposed to be used to explore, oh, I don't know, trails, which sometimes comes across....streams/creeks/washes/fords/etc?

Then the TRD pro that is supposed to be the top dog in high speed dirt driving doesn't have that high mounted intake, something you would think would come in handy in...high speed dirt road or desert driving.

But look at the bright side, the chance of someone taking an 85k (after inevitable options, taxes, and dealer markup) Trailhunter into 3 feet deep water is zero, so no big loss there.

Just took delivery of ours a couple weeks ago…

I was (am still) a skeptic of this new platform. Not so much the truck itself, but the power plant Toyota decided would be “better” for us. I’ve also owned a T100 in the past and currently have a ‘20 Tacoma Sport. I love my Tacoma, and well it was time for the wifey to get a new vehicle. She always wanted a white 4R, but I was very hesitant about buying a 6th Gen. we debated everything out there from Lexus GX460’s and RX350’s… used 5th Gen 4R’s… and even older 5.7 Land Cruiser’s… but in the end she wanted something new. Something no one else had ever touched. And she got just that. We waited about a month a then took delivery of a new ‘26 white/silver SR5. She couldn’t be happier. It’s nice to drive as a daily driver so far. But the rest will come this Spring once we start hauling the kids and pontoon to the lake every weekend… see what it’s really made out of!

As opposed to 5th gen that sounds like a garbage truck crawling in 4lo, thanks to the radiator fan going full blast?

Biggest hindrance with 6th gen off road is its larger size. Hypothetically if the 5th gen was upgraded to the 4-cyl turbo, I would be happy to drive it.

Huh, from that angle sounds like it came with an exhaust leak from the factory.
