Great fuel Ecomomy on my last trip 22.2 MPG

My wife and I took a trip 5 night trip from D/FW to San Antonio in my new 2023 TRD ORP. This photo is on our way back August 12th. Weather was clear and hot, slight southern wind.
At this point we had traveled around 140-150 miles a little over 2 hours with an average speed of 68 mph. My top speed was 84-85 mph. With 1,905 miles on the clock.

 

That's pretty awesome I think, I mean a lot of people don't have the patience for slowing down a tad and using the cruise but it makes a difference. When I owned my own business (trucking) I'd go from DFW to Houston everyday in a semi (Freightliner) and set the cruise at 62 mph and I'd average 9.5-10 mpg it's hard to do but after a few trips you get used to it lol

 

Agree with dbrad that driving style has the most influence over fuel economy, but I also think that the 108°F ambient temps probably helped a good bit too!

 

I typically get that with mine on road trips, even at almost 160k miles. Not being in a hurry and using cruise are the key.

 

For the conditions, Those are great numbers!

 

I did not use Cruise Control. I did start with Cruise for maybe 20-30 miles but there was way to much back and forth with gear shifting. With my foot on the peddle absolutely no gear shifting even when passing. I suppose if I was on flat ground for a long way I'd use Cruise Control.

 

I have the complete opposite experience using cruise control. I’ve done a few 1,000 mile plus trips and cruise control always downshifts for 4th and holds it too long. I typically get 2-3 mpg better without cruise. Some of my experiences are driving over mountain passes, so trying to maintain 70 mph never works in my favor.

 

ecoter, don't see how a high ambient temp can improve mileage since it is a prime determinant of density altitude which is inversely related to power output. Am i missing something?

That's true, good point. Under those conditions I don't use cruise either.

 

I live in southern New England where it's relatively flat. When I'm in the mountains I typically don't use it, you're right about the downshifts.

 

Wind resistance is reduced at higher temperatures. It's a contributing factor to why people generally get awful gas mileage in the winter.

 

Driving style, environment, weather, among other things all contribute to fuel economy. I have gotten over 21 on a tank, and 16 on another tank on the same day. The difference: I was cruising at 65 on the first tank, cruising at 80 on the second tank. Sometimes I will do stuff like that just for my own curiosity.

For giggles, here was my readout from my weekend trip. Believe it or not, most of that was highway mileage. But, probably about 15 or 20 miles of it was at an off-road park.

I reset the trip odometer just before we got to the off-road park, but I did not reset the estimated fuel economy. So, that is the average fuel economy from about 200 miles of highway driving combined with 15-20 miles of off-road driving. Needless to say, it was a fun weekend!

 

Hot air has less oxygen density, so the vehicle's computer reduces fuel delivery to maintain ideal stoichiometric ratio. That's part of the reason you generally get better mileage in summer than winter (the addition of butane to fuel in winter is the other reason).

 

Also, increased wind resistance, rolling resistance, excessive idling, driving in bad weather, etc.

 

OK, so better gas mileage but lower hp.
Seems like one factor would offset the other.
Essentially the theory of N2O injection.
