I live in the Pacific Northwest. You know, land of forests and ferns and fields of green.

Outside of my town last week...

    IMG_20210609_204224785.jpg

Hottest I've ever seen it here was 102 a few years ago. I live in an old farmhouse built in 1895. There is no AC. I have 8" thick walls with upgraded insulation. I have managed just fine with just keeping the windows closed and curtains drawn during the day, then opening it up at night to cool it off. I moved up here from Prescott, AZ in 2012. There, the hottest I saw it was 102 degrees, but I had a huge custom home with central AZ.

Today, my girlfriend informed me that it was going to be record-breaking temps next week. I looked it up and yep, 108 degrees in the forecast.

Hottest temp ever recorded here was 105 degrees. So 108 is a big freaking deal. Was tempted to go buy a window AC unit, but figured spending a few hundred bucks for a couple of days of record temps was silly. Besides, our humidity rarely goes above 50%. I lived in Iowa for a few years where 100 degrees and 90% humidity was normal, and absolute misery.

    This should be doable.

if you drive a lot in that heat, i would shorten a bit the oil change interval, just to be on the safe side

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
Drove though St. Louis Friday on my way to Michigan - 100F and humid.
Grand Haven MI was in the 60's. Needed a light coat out on my Brother In-Law's boat in the evening.

Im one of those without AC...lol. When we moved out here from MI in 2009, I recall zero 100+ days until 4 years ago or so and now we have a couple 2-3 per year. Those days make me miss AC I had back in MI.

Out here in southeastern NC, our A/C runs from early May until mid October usually. This time of the year we are normally in the mid 80's with dew points in the mid 70's which is uncomfortable. When it gets up into the 90's with dew points like that, I don't go outside unless I have too. Today it is wonderful outside 77 with a dew point of 64. For some that would be humid but for us it is comfortable.

I didnt know this until recently, but, north of Seaside is Sunset Beach and you can drive on that beach all the way to the jetties at Astoria which means lots of space to share with other driving on the beach. It's nice because the sand is well-packed except right at the dunes (and even there its not deep sand). It's funny because I got the 4Runner for the beach driving and the first day I took it out there a friggin 89 Camaro comes driving down the beach...lols...as if I needed this 4x4 for the that beach!!

I'm in Pullman, and yeah, today is the last day in the 80's before it's all 90s and 100's for the next week and a half at least. I'm lucky enough to have AC in my condo, thankfully. My office at work is currently sitting at a not-so-pleasant 77 degrees though.

I don't, I work for WSU, usually commute on a BMW F800GS though. My partner works at SEL though, shes in L&D. Small world.

Edit: Guess I should mention though that I just bought it a couple weeks ago, the old owner may have worked there.

I used to work in Phoenix and was a smoker. The company didn't allow smoking on their property, so I had a 600 yard walk off of the campus to a street corner where all of us junkies smoked. 118 degree weather and we would still walk out there and back. Three times a day. Would barely break a sweat due to the low humidity.

Hottest I've been in was training at Fort Irwin in the Mojave desert. 128 degrees. Had to wear gloves to climb on an armored vehicle, and then your boot soles would get slippery because they were melting. Crazy.

My Pop trained in the Mojave too. One of the stories he shared over the years. "We buried cases and cases of sardines out there." Sardines? Yup, they were intended to replace body salt. How crazy was that!

After all that, Pop and his men didn't go to Africa. Their Howitzers were late to arrive, so instead.......they were sent to the Aleutian Islands, 'Alaska'. That's the Army!

Wow! From the Mojave to the Aleutians.......what a drastic shift in climate compared to where he trained.

Can you imagine? And, they were not equipped with with winter gear. They made due with what they had.

My grandpa went to North Africa as a tanker. Then was involved in the push to free Italy. He took hundreds of photos, and I love sharing them. I was told that the movie "Fury" was based on the stories of a few different WWII tanker units, and my grandpa's was one of them.

Damn! The Aleutians get the FULL brunt of Pacific winter storms. Hurricane force winds consistently. Can't imagine living up there.......let alone being dropped off with no winter gear. Crazy stuff.

Yep, when my brother and I went to go watch "Fury", we were surprised to see Brad Pitt's character sporting a patch almost an exact copy of grandpa's...

    download.jpg

    download (2).jpg

And then we realized that Brad Pitt's 1917 S&W .45 ACP revolver, with it's custom grips were nearly an exact copy of the gun carried by my grandfather. He had carved the grips out of plexiglass from the windscreen of a downed German plane and put photos behind them. His had the American flag on one side, and his dog and favorite hunting spot on the other. Brad Pitt's had an American flag on one side, and a picture of a girl on the other.

    download (1).jpg

    WZ03I5kWSJaf1XUmW3gTkA.jpg

We started looking into the movie and discovered that they used grandpa's unit as a significant "inspiration" for the screenplay. Pretty cool.

I ended up going into the Navy as an aviation guy, then joined the army and drove the M60 tank chassis as a combat engineer, following somewhat in my grandfather's footsteps.

Bay Area is like that in the valleys. Normally it’s in the 70s then we get into the 110s with heat waves and we get rolling blackouts and the preening idiot Governor telling us to turn off the AC.

Yeah, and now with the drought the water district has declared a water emergency in the South Bay area. Rainfall was 40% of normal last year, reservoirs are at 15% capacity. We’ll be getting rationing and bigger $bills again soon.

Since being here in 1980 most people never needed A/C in their homes, there were only a week or two with temps in the high 90s in Aug & Sept. You could stay comfy with fans. Now everybody needs A/C with heatwaves of several days over 100 regularly throughout the summer into the fall.
The PNW is getting some of that now.
The times they are a changing’.
