    Hello,

I own a white 1st Gen1989 Toyota 4 Runner with 421,000 original miles. I just recently found out that my coolant is mixing with my engine oil.
I think it’s coming from my oil cooler. The Runner drives , no smoke no leaks but I don’t want to drive her with this condition. I took care of from the get-go & want to know if I can still save the original 22RE or do a complete resto & upgrade

To a LC Engineering street stroker engine, I recently had my shop installed a new clutch & transmission. So, the Bottom line, I’m quite sentimental with my Runner & would like to know ballpark figure how much it would be to restore/upgrade

    My Runner rides on

Welcome from Wisconsin! From my past experience with the 22RE, that I had in a '86 pickup, was it was a little underpowered. A fresh engine never hurts, a LC stroker engine would be a nice thing to have, besides, you'll get rid of the coolant leak to the engine, which in the long run will be detrimental to the engine. Good luck with the project.

Water in the engine oil is very bad for more than one reason.
    1) The water separates after you have shut the engine off and puts the water on top of the oil. This puts condensation inside the engine once the engine cools off. This will rust the cylinders and inside the engine block and all the upper valve train. Water inside the engine is super bad, everything above the oil line will rust including the crank and rods. Anything above the oil line will flash rust. This rust coating on the cylinders below the piston will cause you to lose compression once you crank it up and the rings get forced to knock the rust off the cylinder.
    2) The water mixes with and breaks down the oil causing the oil to lose its lubricity. Once the oil loses its lubricity, it no longer protects like its supposed to and you will start to get metal to metal contact especially the rod and crank bearings. Water in the oil will lead to crank bearing failures in short order.
