It’s a fun forum. Without it, I would have never spent as much as I already have on a vehicle that wasn’t broken. :p So far no regerts, considering that my 4runner is also my daily. The 4runner is a good foundation to customize things to what you want.

I think you’ve earned knowledge of the official super secret forum handshake…welcome.

:D:D:D Can’t say we didn’t try to half-heartedly convince you that you didn’t need to spend money!

@op, get it tune by OTT once you get all the mods completed. This combination will transform the truck and you will enjoy it. Remember this, keep a little memory of how the truck feels before the mod, that way you see and appreciate the step change with every move. :spending:. Once you are done....let us know and we get you started on another mod.

Ha! Thanks! I have a feeling this is going to be way more expensive than my diesel addiction and my 72 ford I’m rebuilding.

might need to go to every other day…

Do you think OTT is a better option than what I currently have? Do they use the vf tuner platform? The couple of mods are still cheaper than the s/c which I haven’t ruled out yet either haha

Every mod has its own unique value. Especially if they are mechanically inclined like the regearing. There is no substitute for regearing period. On the tune, yes I believe they use the VF tuner platform and they have become very specialized these days. I think of the tune as the ultimate "optimizer" of your own setup. That's why you need to do the mods first and then lastly the tune. For example, the tuner can input your gears ratio, tire size, fuel type etc..etc. and all of it adds up. If you are ever down in God's country, come and drive my unit and just compared and see how you like it. That way you can figure out what's the optimum setup for you. Everyone uses their vehicle for different purposes at the end of the day. Enjoy the journey of seeing the changes too.

My wife always tells me I have a listening problem…

gotcha, that makes sense. Thank you for all of the advice! Gears and tires are next on the list! Hopefully will have it done by Christmas!

By Christmas might be a bit optimistic, but maybe. Who's doing the gear swap?

not sure yet. There are a few places in northern Colorado that do gear swaps, not many places here in Cheyenne they I can tell.

Safety being one of the major "excuses" for a mod. The best justification you can use. How do I know?.

I really haven’t really spent that much when I think about. Pretty much just sliders, and maybe something or other I forget. Tires and suspension don’t count because they’re consumables. And I made my own roof rack, so that’s just raw materials…maybe 50 bucks, didn’t keep track. :p

    :anonymous:

edit to add: fridge and solar battery definitley don’t count since (as @ChessGuy points out) that falls clearly under home safety…power outages and such. Seriously, 4runners make for a cheap hobby!

Looks like there are a couple 4x4 shops in the Fort Collins area, also looks like the mostly deal with Jeeps. Anything in particular I need to ask them about a gear swap? I would really like to get this done in the next month of 2.

My go to person is "Hugo" at Toytec in Denver CO for 5th gen 4runner needs. I would suggest go in person and have a chat with your needs.

There are few more shops I trust. RSG offroad, R4T (running for tacos). I haven't done business yet but I'm checking on TRU Automotive for a future project. But sadly they are all Denver CO.

hmm also as far as tires go, is the weight going to affect the mpg more than the width? All the skinny 33s (255/80) seem to be 53 or more pounds and load E but the 285/70 can be had in SL and weigh the same as stock, but are slightly wider. Maybe its trivial, just curious your opinions on this.

    thanks!

My guess is that the effective gear-ratio change caused by a larger tire diameter will impact mpg the most, followed by weight (rotational mass). I’d guess that width has slightly less impact than then the other two factors, but that’s just a guess.
