I have a constantly flashing CEL on my 1996 OBD1 hilux surf. 5vz-fe vzn185. I’ve read that it indicates a severe misfire but I’m just seeing if anyone has any opinions on it given the info I’ve gathered.

So the car has normal, stable idle and when I short E1 and TE1 terminals on the diagnostic port, the engine light just keeps flashing. (Indicating no fault codes?) should there be a code if it’s a misfire? I’ve also read if it’s CEL is flashing it won’t store the code or something hence why there is no code?

Another side note, not sure if it’s related at all or not, but my car has an aftermarket immobiliser. When the key is turned to on position, I press the button on my remote, then the check engine light will flash indicating I can then start the car. Normally as soon as it starts, it goes away, but this time it stays on. Just prior to this, I had problems with the immobiliser which was simply a loose positive terminal on the battery. I’m wondering if it could be anything to do with that?

I’ll probably start with plugs and coils and injectors unless anyone has a better recommendation.

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!
