Folks, just bought a 2022 Limited and im getting engine vibration through steering column when accelerating to higher RPMs. I know Toyota has had great quality control and 4runner being super reliable, so surprised to be experiencing this disappointing issue. I have an 04 w/ 4.7 and never had an issue with engine vibration and dont ever recall having the issue when test driving other Limited models. Has anyone experiencing a similar issue? I started a dialogue with the dealer service manager and of course his answer was Ive never seen this before. Something tells me this may need to get escalated to Corporate at some point

    Thanks!

Just me but the 4.0 isn't the smoothest.

The 4.0 is about as smooth as a Ninja blender full of ball bearings, it could be normal.

I've never owned a 4.7, but if I remember correctly smoothness was one of its hallmarks.

You're definitely not putting a coin on the engine as it will be shot out of the engine bay and may hit someone.

Very interesting. Yes the 4.7 V8 Tundra SR5 that I used for sometime was little smooth than 4Runner but I never sat down and thought about it that its the engine smoothness.

If vibration happens when you're actually moving it might be tires out of balance.

    Welcome to the forum.

Trying to get more specifics from youi.

When you say engine vibration through steering column at higher rpm, can you elaborate?

-is the steering wheel shimmying back and forth “at higher rpm”?

-is it only at higher rpm or higher speed with higher rpm? Maybe at around 50-60 mph? Or is it at higher rpm with vehicle not moving?

More info would be helpful for diagnosing.

hi, the vibration happens when the truck is accelerating and the higher RPMs you go the more vibration you experience. When you get to cruising speed its less noticeable having less of a load on the motor. The minute you remove your foot from the gas its super smooth. I mean it only has 1400 miles on it. its almost like the motor mounts are faulty or something is closer to the steering linkage than it should be - IDK. Ive seen feedback from another site that only the Limited has this issue having the FT FWD system. Not sure how accurate this is. If this condition is normal then id give it back if i could

Did you drive any others, or is yours the only one that you've driven? Maybe if the dealer has another you could take it out to compare?

Been having this issue for almost as long as I’ve had my 18 Limited, which I bought in Sept 2021. Some days it’s more noticeable than others. Have taken it to 5 different shops over the last year, but all they keep doing is rebalancing the tires (for some reason they are out of balance every time I take it in). This past Saturday I took it in and they did they same thing, but the shop also poured in some of that Lucas cleaner and said give it a couple of weeks. Also to use higher grades fuel (haven’t filled up yet). Said if this doesn’t work may need to change the plugs and do a valve cleaning. The Lucas cleaner seems to have helped a little bit so far, but too early to tell. But I would start with the wheels, then check the plugs, and maybe try a bottle of Lucas and see if there is any difference.

My part time 4wd doesnt transmit engine vibes at all through the steering wheel. But if they say limiteds do this more because of full time 4wd, then it’s maybe not engine vibes. If it is engine vibes, you'll feel it change as it shifts and changes gears. But If it’s constant, maybe it’s drivetrain…perhaps front driveshaft needs to be better balanced?

I can sometimes think I can tell when mine is in 4wd, but maybe not if it was a true blind test. Either way, I would not like if I could feel significant engine vibes or drivetrain vibes.

I have a new '22 Limted. 500 miles. At just over 2,000rpm, around 2,300, under load up a steep hill, i get vibration thru the gas pedal and steering wheel. Minor vibration, like the engine isn't running smooth like it does at all other times.

    is this normal...?

Next time I drive mine, I know a perfect hill to test the scenario. Off the top of my head. I can't really recall if it does this or not, I maybe used to it.

One thing I'll say, as far as NVH, the 4L is the least civilized engine I've ever owned. And my first vehicle had a carb'd 350 Chevy I should mention.

I drove my brother-in-law's WK2 Grand Cherokee with the 3.6 and 8 speed this evening, he wanted me to help him diagnose some roughness in the drivetrain that he had been noticing. We going on the highway, and I was like dude this is way smoother than my 4Runner, I don't think I can help you. It also got up to speed way easier, I was going easy on it because I was trying to feel the drive line, and before I knew what I was doing 75 after merging on an uphill ramp.

Haha yeah my other cars are 1999 4.7L Grand Cherokee and 1999 4.0 Wrangler - still great cars and the 4.7 is smooth as butter, but I live on an island in the Virgin Islands and don't have access to good mechanics, so I need reliability (and 4WD)
