I'm wondering if there is anything to this, as far our 5th gens go (4.0L V-6)- Last week, I gave my neighbor a ride to go pick up his Ford F-150 pick 'em up truck that he had taken to his friend's privately run repair shop, where he had brake work done to it.

When we got their and walked in to the shop, the guy was working on what I come to find out was his own 2020 Toyota Tundra, with the big V-8. As we walked in, he was cranking the Tundra and it wouldn't start. He saw us come in, so he stopped what he was doing to wait on my neighbor. But I asked him what was wrong with the Tundra. He said oh nothing. Here he had just completed an engine oil change on it, he said it was his own truck, and he said he cranks the engines on his vehicles for 30 seconds after oil changes so the oil pressure will come up in the engine before combustion takes place. So I said something like oh cool good idea. (Lol) He said yeah, his belief was it helps the longevity of the engines and that's how you get 200 to 300,000 miles on Toyota engines. (Oh-hhhhhh Kay-yyyyy) I didn't say anything, but I was thinking well his starter motors may not last 300,000 miles. Lol....

I'd never thought of doing that on my own cars and trucks. I told him I used to farm up in Michigan and owned and operated big Turbo-Diesel engine farm tractors. Well on those, it stated right in the operator's manuals to crank the engines with the fuel shut off, until the oil pressure gauge started coming up, after performing oil changes. This would also serve to get oil back up in to the Turbo-Chargers- aka priming the turbo. The tractor op manuals also instructed operators to let the engine idle for several minutes after hard pulling field operations, which I always strictly adhered to with my tractors. Shutting down a big Turbo- Diesel engine immediately after working it hard could risk damaging a turbo and its oil lines that circulate oil in the turbo.

I don't know if it's worth it to crank a passenger car or truck like this- I guess different vehicle owners have their own pet peeves or procedures they favor and adhere to. I'll bet the Toyota dealers don't crank customer's engines for 30 seconds before they fire up, after an oil change??? But I wonder how critical this method may become on all the turboed engines these days? I bet these small displacement turbo engines aren't going to last. Customers aren't going to let them idle to cool down like may be recommended, they'll go too long between oil changes, etc. I have a hunch these new small engines with turbos are not going to be as forgiving as our bullet-proof 4.0L V-6s. I don't know. Time will tell. Those of us with the "dinosaur" T4Rs may get the last laugh when it comes to engine reliability and engine life longevity.

My question is, how do you crank an engine for 30 seconds without it starting?

^You pull one of the EFI fuses so the fuel injectors don't spray. There are a few good reasons to crank very briefly without starting:
Loosening crank pulley when your impact wrench can't fit.
    Relative compression test.
Clearing oil from cylinders after rolling your vehicle.

However, cranking for 30 sec after oil change is a waste of time and just shortens starter life. The oil film status on the journal bearings after an oil change is no different than in an engine shut off for a few hours.

What oil weight and change frequency?

Make sure to ask that retard does he do this every morning after it sits overnight?

Good idea if the engine has been sitting for years or a new build but after an oil change pressure builds up in about a second and there is still a residual oil film on everything.

You won't hear any rattling. Direct line from oil to the heads. Toyota has pretty incredible oil pressure. I guess thats why there's no gauge. If you accidentally leave oil filter off and you start it, and instantly remember to shut off, it will dump about 4 quarts or more in the floor in that time.
