I just got my 2017 SR5 back from the body shop after having the driver’s side passenger door painted. The fender flair isn’t fitting as tight as it should be. My guess is the plastic clips need to be replaced. I’d rather do this myself if possible. Can anybody offer advice about how to remove the flair and install with new clips? Only the portion of the flair on the door. Thanks!

I know the flares on my 2nd gen Tacoma were a pop on/off installation via the orange and blue clips that were on there. they did need replacing after being removed once and I’d imagine you need new clips.
pro tip: order new clips online for next to nothing. Don’t go buy them at the dealer

Appreciate your experience. New clips are my guess too. I hope somebody here has done this on a 5th gen in case there is a trick or a surprise. I’m guessing a plastic pry tool. Thanks again.

If I recall there was a few clips in the fender well and then it would pop off

The flair I want to remove is just the section on the door. No fender liner involved. I assume just a handful of clips that pop right into the door so there is no access from behind to squeeze. I’m wondering if I can just grip and pull or use a plastic pry tool. In hindsight I wish I would have just shown up at the paint shop with a bag of new clips for reassembly.

Also the square pegs on the back of the door flare may be broken. I had to repair a few of them with epoxy.

Do these square pegs hold the clips? I haven’t seen the back side of the flair. I didn’t see it when the painter pulled the flair so it is also possible that the clips are fine but the flair itself is compromised. He said nothing broke but he didn’t appear to be a detail guy. I had to ask him redo the interior door panel. I’m fighting an internal battle over whether to mess with it or just let it be. Thanks for sharing your experience.

yes the square peg connects to the blue or red plastic clip. In this picture, the peg has broken off. It should be where the shadow is. That’s the paint overspray where the peg should be.

Do any of you have a suggestion for removing the flair? Plastic trim tool and pull straight out?

I would use a plastic wedge pry bar. Start at the button and slowly push up near the peg and clip. It should pop out. Keep in mind the flare and metal is very soft and is prone to dents.
