You always need to do something about rust and you need to do it immediately. The moment you spot it.

The first step is to remove the rust, often with sandpaper or a grinder. Then, fill any holes with body filler, sand it smooth, and apply primer and paint to prevent future rust. Finally, add a clear coat for added protection.

    1. Preparation:
    • Safety First: Wear safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask.
    • Clean the Area: Remove loose rust and debris with a wire brush or scraper.
    • Assess the Damage: Determine the extent of the rust and whether it requires more than just surface treatment.
    2. Rust Removal:
    • Sanding:
      Use progressively finer grits of sandpaper (e.g., 40, 80, 180, 220, 400, 600, 800) to remove rust and create a smooth surface.
    • Grinding:
For more severe rust, use a grinder with a flapper wheel or wire brush attachment.
    • Rust Converter:
Consider using a rust converter to neutralize existing rust and prevent further corrosion.
    3. Filling and Priming:
    • Body Filler: Apply body filler to fill in any holes or imperfections left by the rust removal process.
    • Sand the Filler: Sand the filler smooth, matching the contours of the car's body.
    • Prime the Area: Apply a coat of automotive primer to protect the bare metal and create a good surface for painting.
    4. Painting and Finishing:
    • Paint Matching: If possible, obtain paint that matches the original color of your car.
    • Apply Paint: Apply several thin coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
    • Clear Coat: Apply a clear coat to protect the paint and provide a glossy finish.
    • Wet Sanding and Polishing: After the clear coat dries, wet sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper and polish to remove any imperfections.

Well how do I get rid of the rust that’s inside that part of the frame?

    ^For your cab mount:
    1. Wire brush away loose rust
    2. Spray with Tremclad rust reformer (primer)
    3. Spray with Tremclad rust semigloss
    4. Spray with Cosmoline (more durable alternative to Fluid Film)
Since you're in Louisiana, that'll last the remaining life of your 4Runner.

Grind, wire wheel, emery cloth, then POR-15 (rust encapsulating paint) with detail spray gun or chip brush. Let dry, then spray the heck out of everything with Fluid Film, even down inside the frame rails. Repeat annually or more often as needed. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

I wonder if that rust is from the plate he put on after he cut it

What scares me about rust is considering it’s in areas that you can’t access.

It's possible he didn't paint the inside of the cab mount. Also the welds tend to rust first.

Looks pretty minor, depends on what you want to do. If you looking to keep it long term and take extra care of it you can go through prepping and painting. Or just use some fluidfilm/Blaster Surface shield on the rust/bare metal, they even make extension nozzles to get into frames and other hard to access areas.

Yeah looking at it that is the plate he welded on, but that was like 2 weeks ago so what should I do? That seems quick

Unpainted steel tends to do that. Not really critical. Just spray a rust primer followed by a few coats of rust paint at it. I prefer Tremclad/Rustoleum because they tend to be more tolerant of poor surface prep. If you go off road, the frame/suspension/armor will all get rock scars needing touchup. This doesn't need to be treated any differently.

For inside the frame, I'm leaning towards the Eastwood internal frame coating as it not only sounds great, but rates really well.
