I'm looking into building a "RTT" I found this set up that I want to mimic. The tent is 7 feet 6 inches long and my roof rack is 6 feet 9 inches long. Any suggestions on a platform? Thank you 1f642_4a70d8e8fbdd74b3dd17997a66b521fddef06acf.png

    Hmmm

    Ground tent used on roof

Begs the question, why not use ground tent... on ground?

Pretty welfare, though I still like it better than a dedicated RTT

We have alot of coyotes that are desensitized to humans and tend to try to get into tents. I'm not really wanting to deal with that and I want to be organized with my camping gear. I usually sleep inside my 4runner but if I want to bring someone like my Mom camping I don't want her to be sleeping on the ground. I don't like sleeping on the ground either. I have a limited budget and storage so a regular RTT isn't realistic for me.

I feel like you should seek out a used Smittybilt or something, you should be able to get into one of those for $400-$500, which I think is close to where you are gonna be if you are trying to cobble together something like what is pictured. Plus a purpose built one is infinitely more safe; I feel like bolting whatever platform you decide to use to support your tent to the rack is going to have potential for explosive failure at higher speeds.

Hopefully your coyotes can't climb ladders! Our coyotes are pretty smart - not "ladder climbing" smart, but "opening chicken coop" smart - but they are still wary of humans and it's super rare to have an interaction at a campsite.

Personally I'd just stick mom in the back of the 4Runner with you. Gear on roof. So it's a little cozy back there. You did come out of her. She'll be cool with it. Cheapest option plus pretty much guaranteed coyote-free.

If money is an issue you could always ask your back seat passenger to front you some pounds.
