Crazy to buy one with 220k miles?

Hello, I'm definitely going to be getting a 4runner soon. I found a 2016 set up exactly how I want it at a reputable dealership. Issue is it has 220k miles. The carfax is clean (says great value), 2 owners, and 41 service records so the owners definitely took care of it. Looks great inside and out. They're asking $15k.

I've had fj cruisers and my lotus has a toyota engine, so I definitely know how reliable they can be. I have just never driven a vehicle to 220k or even considered buying one with that much mileage.

Would it be ridiculously dumb to jump into something like this?

Can you include some pics from this “reputable dealership”? If it was me id save up a little more $$ and get one with lower miles on it.

have you looked in the market place forum here for some camparisons in mileage and $$?

    Welcome from Arizona!
Only you can make that decision. Are the records complete, accurate, honest? What has been replaced? The mileage is less of a problem than the actual vehicle. It sounds a bit expensive for a 10 year old vehicle,but.............

Thanks for the quick replies, and appreciate the welcome (I'm in NM neighbor). When I say 'reputable', I mean that it isn't a smaller private dealership, it's a Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership. Unsure it matters private owned or not, but my brain just imagines it is. I've been looking at 4runners and the way they maintain value is insane. There are some listed for $20k that have +300k miles (not that they'll sell for that). 4.1.jpg 4.2.jpg 4.3.jpg 4.4.jpg 4.5.jpg

It comes with some goodies already. Look at the engine bay and see what state is in, and see if the records tells you how often it was serviced and maintained. If you could bring the price down a little more I would go for it, if it was me...:notsure:.

    Personally I would not buy a 4Runner at 220k.
At that mileage, you are looking at replacing almost every wear and tear part. And that is if everything else was done timely during the life of the vehicle. They will last over 300k, but that takes time, effort and pro active maintenance.

The car looks clean though. The price is high. If they can provide detailed maintenance records and it is rust free and the price is lowered and if you must have this one, go for it.
But remember, only the price to entry is low, the price to run an older high mileage vehicle properly is not.

not the best engine photo, you think they would have cleaned it more but maybe the weather is bad and test drives have done that, but it's in Ohio. I specifically asked for pictures of the frame to see about rust. They said there is zero sign of rust and the pictures they text me seem to show that. It lived its life in Texas and North Carolina. 4.6.jpg

Take it for a test drive on the interstate and mash the gas to the floor and listen for any odd noises of shaking. Obviously with that many miles the likely hood of it breaking increases but if you can do all the minor stuff yourself you should be fine. Take a good look at the hitch, if it's all beat up walk away. Demand to get it up on a lift and take a good look underneath for leaks or torn rubber. Have them pull for engine codes and have a honest independent mechanic you can call if anything comes up. Ultimately the only one that can make the call would be you. Personally looks good to me but find something a little bit off and knock a little off the price.

I don't think there's a better window sticker pic. They want to send me a video now, but I'm not sure that really helps. I know it has lights and all4.7.jpg

On a 4runner set up like that, I would think the LCA bushings are shot and maybe about time for new wheel bearing/hub assemblies. Like others have mentioned, check frame for rust. Probably not too bad if from Texas and North Carolina. But how is it in Ohio now? Seems weird to me.

Yeah I'm not pushing back on you all. I just know this is the place to come for crazy questions like this. I'd have it shipped here honestly. I've been quite lucky buying sight unseen but never this high of mileage. I too worry about the rubber and suspension parts. The carfax seems OK compared to most I've seen. I found another one with 140k miles but it's about $10k more

Interesting that it looks like over 100k of the miles have been added in just the last two years! I wonder if the last owner built it for adventure and then used the hell out of it. The carfax feels sketchy to me....the "government use" registration at one point, and a random lien reported long after the last listed sale, and just after the minor damage was done.

I browsed quickly thru the carfax, seems ok I guess. Lived thru TX and NC for the most part, frame is probably ok. It sure would be nice to see the engine by the timing cover section to see if it is holding there ok, if it is fine, I would go for it for 13k on the spot. I don't think you will find this anywhere else. We can get you a special mention in our 400K thread. :hbd:

Carfax shows "minor" front collision. You need to inspect the quality of the repair in person.

You also need to inspect the workmanship of the mods and upgrades in person. Stuff like this:

    upload_2025-12-31_11-15-7.png upload_2025-12-31_11-17-9.png

As for high mileage, budget $1000-2000 per year replacing worn out parts and you should be OK.

That thing looks like it was taken off road a lot. By the mods and the dusty engine bay. I would pass at that mileage and condition.

Well, it sounds like the consensus is a big 'no' unless they unload it for CHEAP. I guess the search continues. I want to stick around $20k as this will be a 4th car until I offload my JKU.

That's just the auxbeam cheapo box for the switch thing for the green panel switch system up front. Probably a DIY thing done by first owner. I bet he or she was here on the forum 8 or 9 yrs ago posting..:goingcrazy: on what have you done to your 4runner thread. The badging...on the driver side is telling. You would think an enthusiast like this would keep up with the maintenance of the vehicle. OP, without getting inside and giving it a good test drive you are rolling the dice:hungry:

I would have it inspected by a reputable independent 4WD shop if you are serious about it. The dirty engine bay is actually a good thing, as leaks will be easily identifiable. I would however negotiate the price down further, but after the inspection. How long has it been on the lot for?

I like the setup, stance, color, mods, etc. I'm unsure how serious I am given everyone's concerns haha And usually these dealerships always say 'no haggle' pricing. I do not know how long it's been for sale.

absolutely. And while it's justified, it's CRAZY how 4Runners hold their value lol but that's because they'll last 'forever'. Albuquerque is worse. Someone would be asking $20k for that locally, and be rude if you try to negotiate :D
