Could my stock 4R do what FJ did there?

FJ Cruiser is such a tank. Could my stock TRD Offroad with stock tires make that CO trail look so easy? I am curious.

FJ has better angles than the 4Runner and I envy that :)

While I can't answer the O/P's question, I use to kid and say my 2010 FJ in 4L could crawl up the side of a wall. LOL. At least felt like it could. LOL
If Toyota still sold the FJ in the U.S. in 2021, I would have traded mine in for another FJ. The vehical was that good. What I also liked was that it really had the "look" of a genuine off-road vehicle. I liked the overall simplicity, yet purposeful look and driving experience. Not to mention that ultra-reliable, old school engine and transmission. I owned mine 11 years and 161,000 miles and required just regular maintenance. The only negative, as mentioned above, was that horrible - and large - blindspot on the passenger side. But you quickly learn to drive with it including continuious use of the passenger side mirror. On guy riding in the backseat one time commented he felt like he was riding inside a football helmut LOL. That's often the price you pay for unique body styling.
So the natural trade in for me is my current 2021 TRD/ORP/MR. As mentioned above, I have the same underpinnings. No regrets. Love the 4R.

    Although the 4wd tech are same when it comes to clearance and angles I would say;
    GX<5th gen 4R <FJ

To answer the OP's question, yes the 4runner can make this trail look easy. You'd be surprised how much Toyotas can handle stock. That's why I always recommend wheeling stock before modding. That way you know what it can handle and how much improvement you're actually getting from your mods.

As others have said, the shorter wheelbase of the FJ helps with breakover angle and turn radius.

There is some benefit to longer wheelbase to keep the rear planted in a rutted downhill situation. Of course, that can be fixed with improved suspension travel. Also, longer wheel base commonly shows some improved ride comfort on road.

This guy has some mods, but he keeps it basic. In this video he is running OME susoension with 3 inches of lift and armor. You could probably do most of this stock if you dont mind damage to the underside lol.

After 4 years they still have the same setup and still drive like it's stolen.

I love it because it was almost same as my TRD ORP (Before I went with ELKA). 285/70/17 BFG KO2's, SPC UCA, RCI full steel skids, RSG sliders and no KDSS. Almost twin except for TJM snorkel..:D

True! But, the difference is so minor that it will probably never affect the majority of us. Honestly, if someone is doing stuff that a 4Runner can't handle, they should have bought a Wrangler.

Me personally see a big difference between my Limited vs TRD ORP when it comes to obstacles with that lower front bumper. I can't imagine something like a GX with much lower ground clearance handle same even as a 4R Limited. Again its personal where I don't feel comfortable damages to bumpers as well. I would get a heart attack if I get body damage.. LoL.

    Update -

This is the area that is very hard to avoid damages.

If you have a luxury SUV with fairings and shit and you legitimately plan on taking it off road, then you’re not averse to cutting the offending plastic bits off.

GX is Prado. Prados are damn good offroaders. Lexus ornaments have made GX not good for offroad.

That's why I'm looking to do a Viper cut. Without it, it'll only be a matter of time before one of those corners gets whacked up.

I don't think its doable for the 4R Limited or GX. Unless I go with TRD / SR5 bumper for the Limited.

For a GX you pretty much have to cut the entire section of the bumper.

I have had no issues so far on trails in Washington state with my stock 4Runner and stock tires. I absolutely agree with you, I need some more time before I decide that I will need AT tires or maybe a little lift. I'm not in a rush

    There are 2 sides IMO.

Running with stock tires you get a really good sense of what your vehicle is capable of. If you change stock tires when they are new it will be easy to sell & get more money towards your new purchase.

Eg - When I post the stock tires for sale while I was at the dealership for my TRD ORP I was able to sell them immediately because the buyer knows the tires are practically brand new.

But on another side my money is wasted when I sold my stock size A/Ts for bigger size after lift. Back to endless money pit story.

They did fine on those rocks, once they slipped I engaged the 4Low. I think any kind of tires would slip, because it was kind of steep uphill. 2WD wouldn't do it.

These are Bridgestones right? (My buddy's 2021 got Bridgestones). Older 4Runners got Dunlop Grandtrek at20. They were much better than the newer Bridgestones .

I personally don't wait till tires slip to go in to 4H. Again could be personal thing. When I see a possibility of tire spin like small rocks I will put to 4H. When I see medium size rocks I put to 4L to slow down. There are places my brain debates 4H vs 4L. Senior members can correct me if I'm wrong, I was just trying to give easy work for powertrain vs testing its capability.

Again I could be wrong, so might want to wait for advise from a senior experienced driver.

I like the part where he drives through deep water. But how does he prevent all that water from getting into the hood scoop and flooding the air intake?

Oh yeah, now I remember. That hood “scoop” doesn’t actually do anything… :boink::laugh:

So far I have been doing fine. Unless I come across a trail that will bring my 4Runner to its knees, I don't think I will buy all terrain tires and lift. And looking at my 4Runner and all that off-roading tools that it comes with, I think it has to be a really special trail to get me stuck.
Gas mileage and ride quality are also very important to me, that's why I have the KDSS. Driving this rig on the highway and curves it's so good. And I get like 23 miles to a gallon when I am behaving myself

FJ may have better angles, but it is a freak :D, 4Runner is a much more practical and better looking vehicle.

The only thing it doesn’t have that my 2007 FJC had was full-time all wheel drive and a 6 speed manual transmission.

I don't think those two qualities make it better on the trails. Stock FJ has better angles than stock 4Runner and it is also short wheel base. I saw another video in which a stock FJ made it without scratching itself on the rocks, while the lifted TRD Pro got its ass scratched.

I think it would be more fun to have a manual transmission in a little Corolla with 300 horsepower and 300 torque. Zipping around town, that would be fun
