Convert cigarette style power to USB C

Hello All,

Does anyone have a way to convert the cigarette style power in the front and the two in the back to USB C fast charger?

Would like to avoid those plug-in type, more of a Toyota / Lexus part that i can install in place of the existing.

If the only way are those plug-in ones, which brand do you all use?

Toyota's solution to add more USB charging was to splice in dual ports. This was done at the dealer at the time. Something similar should be fine for you to use.

 

Ideally i would do the plug in ones, you never know when there will be a USB-D or whatever. There are aftermarket options on Amazon to go in there place though.

I just plug these in and remove when I have to plug in my laptop charger to 12v outlet.

 

I went with this and it charges my laptop lickety split. Permanent but reasonably easy to install with a little Dremel work. Prefer the ports and voltage meter although it's super bright.

Had a bad experience with one of those plug-in ones, used it when i had a Volvo, got a smell of burning, removed immediately, but unfortunately started having electrical ad-hoc issues after that.

 

I agree. Quality plug in is the way. Not cheap gas station variety.

 

He said he'd like options so I offered options I have used personally. One built it and one plug in. Just trying to help.

 

I did that over 2 years ago. Still works great.

 

If you choose wisely they do. I have a duel USB-A and USB-C that's used every day and its from 2020.

I bought the extra outlets for the front and rear but have only added the rear. I may look into something like this for the front:

QC/PD charging standards evolve every couple of years, so you WANT the plug-in type, to be able to upgrade easily. Mine are from 2022. If I were shopping for one today and wanted dual PD ports, I'd buy this:

There are units with dual 100W PD ports, but they'll exceed the fuse rating for your cigarette lighter port. Example:

I think 5V 2A 100-120W will suffice my moderate cellphone choices for many years. If I could figure out how to hard install one of those suckers in my dash I’d be the most satisfied

Usually had for around $45. Plug and play Toyota accessory:
Electronics, Dual USB Power Port - Toyota (PT976-03201)

 

No drilling, just light filing down of the plastic hole where the cigarette socket was, since its a bit smaller diameter than the USB socket I installed. I'll post some pics soon

 

Here's the thing people in here linked installed in the rear.

I recall the cigarette lighter being slightly difficult to get off and I think I just cut it, then dremelled the hole larger.

 

I was just about to post the link to Powerwerx. They make some good quality stuff. I plan on adding a number of outlets through an MSD ignition solid state fuse panel on another vehicle. Haven’t really needed it on the 4Runner as of yet.

 

Since the charger lives in the socket full-time, I ripped the cover off in both of my Toyotas

Shout out to Ham Radio Outlet for such fast shipping on the USB sockets (even though their local store is an hour away). My Labops RAM dash mount came with a dual USB-A socket (outdated) so I decided to change it out for a dual USB-C socket from Powerwerx. Figured if I was going to go through all the trouble of wiring it up I might as well switch out the front cigarette port I never use to USB-C as well. Super easy considering I don't know much about wiring stuff up.. would recommend. Only "cutting" I had to do was a slight bit of filing down of the hole where the cigarette port was, as it was slightly smaller than my USB socket. I went a bit extra and skipped the t-taps provided and soldered, inline-fused (7.5a each socket on 15amp cabin fused line), then used heat shrink on everything as I'm not interested in any safety issues down the road
