Compressor in the engine bay? Good or bad idea?

Got a 5th gen 4Runner and I installed an air compressor for my overlanding adventures, but my buddy was telling me that this will shorten the life of the compressor. Googled it and did find some info on that because of heat it would shorten the life of the compressor.
Anybody ran into issues with that mod? Any suggestions of another spot to keep an air compressor semi permanently?

 

They make compressors that actually mount in the bay.

Not just strapped in like that.

 

Open hood, let things cool down before use. There are tons of folks running under the hood compressors without issues. Just pay attention to the compressor's body/cylinder temperature before firing it up. If you can't hold your hand on it then dont run it until it cools down. And beware that some compressors have a 'duty cycle'.

 

Had one under the hood in Oklahoma heat for a while now without issue. Use it for lockers, I don't check anything or let it cool for a single second before turning it on and letting it rip. Usually just leave it engaged and at 150 PSI while wheeling.

 

The location is OK. Cheaper compressors usually can't handle water exposure. However, the Viair is IP54 rated, splash-resistant. It is not waterproof, so don't aim the pressure washer at it when washing the engine bay after a wheeling trip.

 

Need new friends. Nothing wrong with these units in the engine bay.

 

Mine has lived there for about 40k miles and 4 years. Countless washed and plenty of heat and dust.

 

If in doubt only attach it when on trips. Store off truck when daily driving. Vibration from loose mounting also hard on any mechanical stuff. Letting it cool before use in hot weather seems good advice.
