    Hey guys!

Just had a question, recently purchased a used 2007 4Runner Sr5 (v6 73k miles) and there's now a clicking sound at idle. It seems to be coming from somewhere in the rear of the engine but I can't pinpoint where or what it is. I took a few video's to see if anyone has any rough idea's of any common problems in the 4th Gen 4Runner? I'm apologizing in advance because I had the phone vertical.

    Thanks!

this sounds a lot like my AC compressor knocking, is it on during these videos? if so turn it off and see if it continues. I hope its just the AC like mine, would hate for it to be a valve.

I'll listen to mine when I get home, does it go away with revving the motor or does the clicking get louder or faster?:notsure:

It's next to impossible to hear it with any revving, really only noticeable at idle when I'm in my garage.

^ That was going to be my guess without listening to the video. Try upping your octane. As much as everyone says it doesn't matter, in both my Tacoma and my 4runner, the 4.0 ticks a lot less with premium gas.

Did premium gas resolve the tick? I have the same noise coming from mine.

Was there ever a conclusion as to what the sound was? I recently purchased a 2007 SR5 and noticed the same sound. It's not quite a knock but it's a tick. Seems be in sync with the RPMs and will accelerate when I rev to 1500 or so. Can be heard from inside with air off in Park.

SOUNDS LIKE YOUR VALVES NEED TO BE ADJUSTED AND WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD YOUR TIMING BELT WAS CHANGED.IF TOUR TIMING BELT IS WORN OUT IT WILL THROW THE TIMING OFF AND CAUSE THE VALVE TIMING TO BE A LITTLE OFF MAKING THE TICKING NOISE.THEY SELL THE TIMING KIT AT O'REILLY'S WITH THE BELT IDLER PULLEYS TENSIONER PULLEY WATER PUMP AND CAM AND CRANK SEALS FOR LIKE $290.00 THEY MUST BE CHANGED EVERY 100.000 MILES THEY ARE DESIGNED TO LAST THAT LONG NOT MUCH MORE THEY GET STRETCHED OUT AND THROW OFF THE TIMING.

    oh the list....!
My guess is injector noise. My old '86 hilux with a 22re did it all the time. The first time I heard it I freaked out thinking it was valve train, or maybe a leaky exhaust gasket. Nope.

i had a ticking noise in my 3.4 i had to replace the valve cover gaskets so when i had it apart i adjusted the valve they were all off a little but one was way off but i did have 248.000 miles on it the noise was gone after that. it was on the # 5 cylinder on the intake valve. i have been using berrymans fuel system cleaner for about a year now what a huge difference i ran a camera down the cylinders there was a ton of carbon build up i put berrymans every fill up for a year checked the cylinders again all the carbon was totally gone it ran so much smoother better gas mileage better pedal response it cleans everything even the cat converter.cant say enough about that stuff try it its cheep insurance $3 a can thats what i did to fix the ticking noise hope you fugue out what it is i know it will drive you nuts unfortunately you truck was built in the states they dont take as much pride in there work like the japan es thats way my truck is still as nice as the day it was built 20 years later just stating a fact. good luck larry b
