Chevy Equinox SUVs with Front-Wheel Drive Will Ditch Their CVT

I am very optimistic that recent EPA changes will revert the enshitification trend for automotive powertrains as more anti-features are phased out. Now, if OEMs stop collecting and selling your data we can get back to early 2000s era of simple and reliable cars.

I like Toyota's approach in the CVT They use in the corolla, with a physical 1st gear to avoid the most stressful part of the transmission's job. 41/32 from a gas only engine is impressive from a naturally aspirated 2 liter engine in a fully equipped family car.

Bigger vehicles might benefit from a well built 8-10 speed though for durability's sake.

    Is the durability bad?

I had to change the tranny oil on my accord's CVT at 30k instead of the recomended 60k because it was slipping.

So I am worried about CVT reliability and it was immediately what I thought was a contributing factor when I heard about this.

Edit: and apparently this is a common issue on these cars. These super reliable Hondas.

Of course it is. Its a CHEVROLET - Constantly Having Every Vehicle Recalled Over Lousy Engineering Techniques!

Pulley CVTs vary widely. Seems with more frequent fluid changes, solid examples are acceptable.

I've still seen a few examples of Honda CVTs north of 100k miles (not at 150k yet) and less regular maintenance before I came along. (boo's family loves their Honda's)

As the rules are still there and not formally removed, I doubt the effects will be significant as auto companies (well, maybe not the Big Two and Stellantis) plan medium-term and for the whole world, not just the US.

It's essentially the local police saying they won't enforce the speed limit. But yes the law is still in the books... who knows if we will use it and on whom... Maybe there will be a new commissioner soon and he's been keeping tabs on people who did speed in the meantime.

I don't really hear much about those types of CVTs from GM though either way. Guess the cars they go in have other issues first?

Can you reply back that you're a lead honda engineer and anything with a CVT is a death trap waiting to explode so I can show that to my wife to help justify getting a Nissan Z? And please do not quote this.

I don't know what happened with Hondas. between the CVTs and some of their motors, quite the fall from grace. How the H does Honda f up a 3.5L V6?

The last Nissan Z that I had was an 2005 Infiniti G-35-6MT Coupe that was for the most part a good car. The power of the 300 hp 3.5 liter V-6 with a six speed close ratio manual transmission was a ton of fun.
The negative was the Z rated tires (Sumitomo XTR Z-3 instead of the crappy Bridgestone REO50s) that only lasted for 20k to 25k miles with spirited driving.

Hello it's me, Charles van Transmission, inventor of the transmission at the Japanese Automatic Transmission Company (JATCO) and don't you dare! Get a nice, safe yet exhilarating option like the Supra or Z!

Corolla S Premium here, CVT going strong had the fluid changed at 100k miles and 200k miles. They did reprogram it or something after I bought it. Paddle shifters too.
