Just had my catalytic converter stolen. Have to drive the car till I get fixed. The car doesn’t want to idle correctly and after driving some will stop when idled down. Can this be caused by the converter being absent. ??

Question is will the car run ok with no converter and gap in exhaust pipe temporarily?

Might make it run like crap, but I don't think it will perm hurt anything. After all, it's an exhaust. In the time before time, we rebelled against the 'catalytic' mandate. We cut them off, spot welded straight pipes, even carried adapters to used leaded gas. Without a 'converter' a sparkplug can be used to ignite the remaining, which would be pretty cool on a 4Runner. Haven't seen it done in a while though....sigh.

This is when remote parking mode comes in handy with hybrid vehicles. Crime should be a dangerous venture, need more criminals dying on the job, make the lifestyle unattractive.

With the catalytic gone, an O2 sensor may have been damaged or removed during the theft. Even if not, your computer no longer understands the crazy readings from the sensor(s) now that there’s less back pressure. That’s why the rough running.

Really sorry this happened to you.
It's a big worry for me as mine is still unprotected and several have been taken in my neighborhood.
I will probably hit up a couple muffler shops in the area for a quote.
I will say the prefab ones on the various websites are a little on the pricey side for what they are, and this is coming from someone who spent most of his life in the steel-fab business.
That being said, I am glad that there are entrepreneurs out there providing for the demand that unfortunately exists.

My wife just returned last night from a 3 week stay at her dads house in California. She made it home with the catalytic converter still on the 4Runner. I did see a new policy has been passed in Albuquerque that requires all sales of catalytic converters to have name and address of person selling and type of vehicle converter came from. Let’s hope that’s adopted for all states.

Wow, it's about time!! I'm sure they'll find ways around it, but maybe it will require a little bit more effort. Still mind boggling to me that this wasn't required sooner, while I've had to show ID to turn in scrap copper for the last 15 years or so.

Stolen cats are sold on the black market and shipped to China.

That law will have little effect.

Anyone know if a full coverage insurance policy covers a stolen cat? Just wondering.

When I check with my insurance the answer was yes. It covers the cat and any related damage and I only have to pay comprehensive deductible. Something I forgot to ask is will they pay for genuine Toyota cat and other related parts or would it be a generic one. Just like windshield replacement where we have to fight to get Toyota glass as they always want to pay for Safelite glass.

That sucks sorry to hear! Happened to my wife's previous highlander, her new highlander has the cat clamp installed.
My 4runner has Rci plates and shields to deter this.
