Hey guys. I could use some help. The back door specifically the wood entry piece. We noticed we are getting water transfer from that wood piece to the hardwood floor. This has caused the hardwood floor to warp.

    1. I took off the door and replaced the weather strip on the bottom
    2. I had to sand that wood piece to get the door to close properly
    3. When I touch that wood piece it is very wet. It’s soaking up rain water

am I supposed to coat that wood piece with a water protectant?

appreciate all tips. Thank you and happy Easter IMG_3726.jpg

There isn't much you can do if water keep getting in.

Your #1 priority before attempting to fix this is preventing water getting past the door. Look at redirecting water getting off your roof, cleaning gutters, etc. Next, check the slope of the pad outside, to make sure it does not direct water toward the door. Next, consider if the door has to be replaced, as it looks quite old/worn to me.

That’s the screen. The door isn’t in the pic. Our roof, gutters and downspouts are 1 year old. Everything has been replaced. Had 5 inch gutters and downspouts installed. The door points south and sometimes the rain comes from that direction. The door is in great shape. The slope is not the issue. There is a paver brick step to get into the house. No water is pooling. I just feel that I am missing a step with that wood. Like a waterproof coating

Are you leaving you r door open when it rains lol?

    Edit:

Looks like that wood piece is already rotting and wet and ahould be replaced

Ia water getting under your door? Do you have a rubber slider that prevents water entry? Home depot has simple transitions for this

Have you done a water test? Use spray option on water hose and run water as if raining against your door -

Use a Composite, they don't rot & if you're gonna use wood get Press treated & coat it with MinWax Helmsman Spar Urethane. Don't be afraid to put it on several times. I use it on my Utility trailer bed since new.IMG_1350.jpg

    This.

Water should not be getting to that wood trim in the first place.

If you aren't able to keep the water off it based on the design of the door, maybe replace that trim piece with vinyl.

That piece of yellow wood that is wet and looks like it is deteriorated from the water intrusion is on the interior of your house, it should never get wet under normal conditions, water is getting passed the door and or under the bottom threshold in some way and that is what needs to be fixed, once you get it fixed then you can replace the yellow piece of wood, if you replace it now or as you seem to want to do by sealing it it will not fixed your issue.

I speak from over 55 years working in the custom home industry, I have done everything from building custom homes and doing much of the work hands-on before ever building my first custom home.

Post some photos of that area and the entire jamb assembly with the actual door closed, show the outside, inside and any weather-stripping, so we can see better how it should be sealing to the jamb and threshold, it's hard to tell with the photo you have posted, but what you have is water intrusion passed the door somehow.

Sure, but next thing you know we're going to have people asking if they should have mashed or roasted potatoes with their pot roast. There are more appropriate places to ask carpentry questions, and you know I'm right.

There's nothing "political" about it. It's not the correct forum to discuss carpentry. We all come here because we have a common interest and that interest is 5th Gen. 4Runners. If I want to discuss carpentry, I go to the numerous carpentry forums that I subscribe to.

Other than being posted in the wrong subforum, I don't see the issue.

And no, you didn't come here to discuss 4runners. You've spent multiple posts in this thread complaining about everything but 4runners

Okay. All good. I did wish everyone a happy Easter. On a side note, found my front differential seal is leaking. There. I’ve redeemed myself. Taking the 4R in on Tuesday. Got the 100k warranty and I’m currently at 98k miles.

My guess without seeing more pictures is that rainwater is getting trapped between the screen door and the main door. There should be some weep holes under the screen door to let the water out. They are probably clogged with crud. You can also add a new bead of caulk at the transition from the sill to the wet piece of wood and at any screws in the sill.

I've said what I needed to say about this thread, and I believe it's based in sound principle. You guys want to allow anything and everything to pollute the 5th Gen forum, so be it. I thought we had higher standards here.

Looks like the water is coming in from higher as well. May be time for a replacement. Doesn't look like the sill has much to protect from the driving rain. If the water can't be stopped, it will get much worse down the road. Also looks like the tile/patio was finished to high, no place for water to go.

If the entrance is flat with no rain channels at the base of the door frame. I suggest you look at an awning as an option.

You shouldn’t be getting water inside the sliding door. It looks like it’s weeping underneath the threshold and/ or the sliding door. Might be time for a new door

Yes, had the OP made a thread about OCI or 0w20 vs 5w30 it would have been on topic. However, this heinous topic is firmly off-limits and clearly rule-breaking.

The gall talking openly about the leaky back door. What if SO walks into the room while I accidentally clicked on this thread?

I had to replace a vinyl doorwall a few years back. Water was coming in and going into basement. Thank God it was not basement wall.

There were drains on this style of doorwall (made by local window manufacturer). The inside of the drain area cracked thus slowly letting in water.

Once the doorwall was replaced $800 later problem solved
