    Hello guys,

I'm about to build a drawer system for the back of the 4th Runner 5th gen (2017). But, before beginning this project, I was wondering ... how much these anchor can really hold, do they are enough strong to keep the drawer system to fly in case of a crash of rollover ? I try to find the information, but, I can't find a clear answer. The drawer system I plan to build is the following : https://trail4runner.com/2019/12/02/dual-drawer-storage-system-diy-plans/

The drawer system will weight about 125lbs, and let say about 150lbs of gear, tools, and other things. I don't plan to carry more than 300lbs (including the weight of the drawer system).

Do you think that the 4 anchors (the stock ones) will be enough to hold this load, even in a crash or rollover scenario ?

    thank you guys :)

There are several companies that make drawers that attach to the cargo area anchors. I'm pretty sure you will be OK to attach your drawers to them. I've never seen a "crash test" with drawers installed so take that for what it's worth. I wouldn't have any reservations using them.

Hi ATX14, thank you for your answer :). What make me worry about that, is more in a crash event. I also think that they must be ok for some heavy weight , I just don't know how much weight. I pretty sure they can support a 300lbs static weight, but, in a crash or rollover event, I think the 300lbs can be as much as 3000lbs, do these 4 anchor will be enough ? I tried to find the information in the owner Manual but I didn't find anything yet, I will need to take a look further in Toyota manuals. I'm little worried about putting a drawer system since I carry the kids in the 4Runner, but, the drawer maybe better than carrying lot of stock loose in the cargo area.

I agree with crash concerns and I have not seen any strength ratings for the anchor points. With that said, regardless of static strength ratings, any crash will more than likely exceed that rating quickly. Similar to climbing gear testing where the equipment is tested slowly until it fails. In a fall, or quick de-acceleration which happens in a crash, most anchor points are not tested in this fashion. I would not worry about anchoring my drawer system to the factory anchor points. You can always "over engineer" and create additional anchor points to your drawer system at various locations of the floor of the 4R. There are factory threaded holes that already exist or you can create new anchor points to your liking.

It's just me, but I would think anything aftermarket that has any weight at all to it would turn into a dangerous projectile in a rollover event. I'm sure the car manufacturers go through some rigorous testing to ensure the oem items, i.e. seats, storage cubbies, etc. remain attached in crash tests. Given enough force, anything can come loose. I wonder if you'll actually find any information regarding the maximum force those tie-downs will hold up to. I get the feeling they'll not publish anything like that, in order to cover their butts.

I agree with you on this. I've seen way too many wrecks in my lifetime which is why I ratchet strap anything on top of my ARB drawer systems in my 4R. In my Jeep, I have netting that separates the cargo area from my lock box which has tie down points attached to the top of my lock box. Anything on top of my lock box is ratchet strapped down.

Hi ATX14 thank for the answer, you said that threaded hole exist, do they are under the carpet or on the side ? I didn't located any additional ones in my 4runner (I have a 5th 2017 limited).

Hi glwood, good point. Probably a legal matter, and they don't wanna be liable if something happen in a crash.

Easy answer, Yes. The threaded holes exist, but you may have to drill through the "pot" metal to find them if you do not have the stock sliding tray which utilizes those holes. There is a good thread about installing the ARB drawer system and it gives measurements on how to find the hidden threaded holes. I also added some extra anchor points using existing holes and added nutserts into the existing holes that exist near the 2nd row seats. I took off my carpeted covering which exposed the foam insulation, remove that, and you will see the stock holes. Look up the thread that gives the dimensions of where the stock threaded holes are.

Here are the locations for the rear threaded holes. Taken from the ARB drawer installation thread. All 4Runners have these holes from the factory regardless if it has the factory slide out tray.

I can’t remember but I believe it was either M8 or M10 threaded bolts.

Hi ATX14, do they are visible, even when they are covered by the pot metal, I tried to find them, but, I can't. All 4runner have them ?

Also, I was wondering, does wielding some anchor may add solidity ? I mean, if I wield with a MIG two big 600lbs anchor directly on the body, can it be good too ?

Grest setup 4Runner170V, thank for sharing. Did you add anchor point, you only use the 4 normal point in the 4Runner ?

Great work guys :) you all have a really nice setup. I'm about to do it myself, now, I just need to figure out the height of the drawer system, I was thinking of 9,5inch, so this way my kids can recline their seat to the max.

Yes, all 4Runners have them installed from the factory. If your 4R didn’t come with the factory slide out tray then they will not be visible and they will be covered up by the thin pot metal. There are only 2 threaded holes located near the rear of the vehicle.

Really nice setup :) ! I was looking for an aftermarket drawer system, but, where I live in Canada, I was quoted 1500$. I will try to do it myself, it will be less expensive.

Don’t blame you. I was able to get them on sale with free delivery so that took some of the sting away in regards to cost.

How much room above the ARB drawers do you have and what model of ARB drawers? I am looking for the room above the drawers that you could slide something in and out, and the height to the highest point of ceiling.
    Thank you
