Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me, i bought my 2005 4runner it was running great then one night, about a month later, it died and overheated i pulled over right away but the radiator hose blew off. We had it towed home, plugged in the code reader and nothing, the only thing was it would turn over but not start, even got a brand new battery and still nothing. we had it towed to a mechanic who said it needed a whole new engine so they refer us to Toyota World in Sun Valley, CA an hour 1/2 drive. We had it towed to another mechanic closer to us, to get a second opinion they couldn't figure it out either. so We called Toyota world they said yes, they can, so we had it towed there, and gave them the $5200 dollars they said for them to put a new engine in. After two weeks they finally said it was ready but we came and got it and it was running really badly, there was smoke coming out of the exhaust, was making weird sounds, fluids leaking from underneath, the AC no longer worked, and it would no longer shift into 4WD! We called right away, they came and got it, and took it back to their shop. Another couple weeks went by and we called every day but they kept telling us "Not ready yet" finally they said we could come pick it up and that it was good to go, but they lied again. It was having the same problems still and was below E, we barely made it to a gas station and a headlight was even out. The check engine light came on and they had told us that if it overheats and blows the radiator it voids the 180 day warranty. That's crazy, also it doesn't even look like a new engine. The p001 code is on now also. we haven't even been driving it because it feels like its gonna break down.. anyways, my question is, if they lied and it didn't need a new engine, what did they do to get it to start that two other mechanics couldn't figure out?

Your initial issue must have been a blown head gasket. Avoid all of these places in the future.

Toyota World probably used a junkyard engine and they royally screwed up the install.

You may have to just cut your losses at this point...or demand your money back or sue them.
