Biggest Spare Tire Size with KDSS

    Hi all,

    I'm a 2-time Tacoma owner and am moving to an SUV. I'm looking at a T4R but also considering a GX460. I'd like to upsize to 285/70r17 or 255/80r17 (ideal but selection sucks) tires.

    I'd really like a 460 tbh but the verdict is out that a 265/70r17 is the biggest spare tire you can fit under the vehicle due to the KDSS and the Class IV hitch. That's kinda a deal breaker to me. I don't want a rear tire carrier. I inquired with some of the members on that forum, and even without the hitch installed they say that a 265/70r17 is the biggest spare tire size due to a rear crossmember.

    I understand that the T4R and the 460 have an identical frame so I don't understand where the discrepancy is coming from.

    I've been reading alot on the T4R forums where members indicate they have easily fit 285/70r17 in the spare location. CAn I assume that they don't have KDSS?

    Anyone have KDSS and can comment on if a 33" will fit in there?

    You can fit 285s back there. KDSS has nothing to do with the rear at all.

    Hey, I'm almost positive there is a rear kdss swaybar behind the rear diff that would reduce the size of spare that will fit. Why do you think the kdss would only be on the front?

    Correct. The sway bar is tight on the spare, but I have a 285/70/17 in there. It's tight, but doable.

    Geez man...you're sounding alot like my wife there! hahaha. True. I don't need to upsize my tires but just curious as to how the rear KDSS swaybar affects the ability to store a 33" tire under there...

    Yes, it is..

    KDSS links both sway bar links with hydraulic lines. The sway bars are larger than the standard sway bars as well. That's why we have reduced body roll. The rear sway bar with KDSS is tight to the spare

    Thanks for the info. Sounds like I can wedge a 33" in there. FYI, Toyota's own video clearly shows the front and back KDSS linked together.

    Correct. KDSS is literally the linking of both sway bar links with hydraulic pistons. If they weren't linked, it wouldn't be KDSS.

    Most of the folks who don't have it or like it don't actually know what it is.

    Nah I don't mean to be that guy at all haha. The reason I ask is that I feel there is a common misconception that spares need to be the size of the regular tires or else the vehicle will spontaneously combust.

    I could see having a same size spare if I was gonna be hundreds of miles deep in some woods, but driving on a mismatched spare once in a while for moderate distances isn't going to hurt anything.

    Agreed. And for a daily driver, the KDSS is a must-have in my book. I test drove a pro and an offroad. Definitely a positive difference in road manners.

    I just mounted 285/70/17 tires on my truck. My spare is a AT from Discount Tire under the Pathfinder brand name. It fit with no issues. I watched the guy mount it up. My lazy butt needs to crawl underneath and look as well. Photo has nothing to do with the spare but hey posts with pics are better right?

    EDIT: I crawled under there today. Tomorrow I will try to take some pics. Going to put the truck on a lift to make sure there are no issues with the tires touching. Then I can get a better picture. There appears to be at least 1" of clearance. Sadly I never looked under with the stock tire mounted to compare the difference.
