    Hey y’all.

I’m researching Toyota 4runners and wondering what year(s) to avoid and what year (s) would be best for overlanding? I personally don’t like any of the new gizmos, just want a reliable, capable and easily upgradeable platform. I’ve been looking at the 3/4 gen the most. I heard about bad frames from a friend, etc etc. just want to know what to expect and look out for as I’ve been a Cummins guy for a long time

I would go with the 5th Gen. It has been around for 11 years now and is tried and true with lots of aftermarket support.

Are you looking to set up in interior sleeping platform? I'm just asking because I think an 80 or 100 series Landcruiser would be really nice for setting up an interior sleeping platform. They're just a bit bigger than the 4runner. And, the 80 series still had a solid front axle.

Otherwise, any generation 4runner will be a fine platform. The only one I might avoid are the 2nd gens with the 3.0 V6, as those motors had head gasket issues. I don't think they were unreliable, just a little more prone to trouble than others.

Land Cruisers are over priced for most people. Pick up a 5th gen or an older trd from a previous generation. You should be fine.

Just throwing out ideas. A used 80 series Landcruiser will be cheaper than a used 5th gen, FYI.

Did you read my entire post? Or, just the part you disagreed with?
