my 2018 T4R came with full synthetic, correct?

Couldn't get into a Toyota dealer before my 3k mile road trip this week. This is my first oil change at 10k miles. They just asked me if I want full synthetic. I said yes.

    Is that the right call?

Regular synthetic from what I've seen. Probably won't hurt anything but your wallet.

Is regular synthetic different than "full synthetic"?

is it on the oil filler cap?

also, it's 0W-20, which is only a synthetic grade

also, it should be in the owner's manual...

There are synthetic blends and full synthetics. Usually people are pretty specific about full synthetic and other just call it synthetic. They make both the OW-20 in the blend and the full. I am sure the full is what the manual means if it just says synthetic, but I wouldn't worry either way as long as it was OW-20. You can technically get more millage out of a full synthetic oil change, but the 4Runners aren't approved for that by Toyota...but I've seen some arguments on here about it. You should be good. Have a great vacation.

Thanks. I'll verify that it's 0-20. It's been in there for 2.5 hours now and I just asked what's up. They said it's the first time they've ever done an oil change on this type of vehicle.

Haha I'm a little uneasy hitting the road now...

It's a tricky one from what I understand. Haven't done my own on this one yet and won't for at least 5 years. I am sure it did throw them for a loop. I think you have to remove the skid plate covers and need a special oil filter wrench from what I understand. If they didn't have the wrench they probably had to go get one.

Genuinely interested where you keep it--mine never leaves my vehicle unless I take it out to read something.

Well, a 3 hour job and we're back on the road. She's running well. 0-20 full synthetic. And I assume the Honda boys learned something new today.

    Thanks guys.

Good lord. It was $149 for the full synthetic oil change. My fault for not asking ahead. I figured it'd be $39.99. Nope. Never had a truck that ran synthetic before.

Also my fault for not planning ahead and getting the free Toyota care oil change. Totally forgot about it before my trip. And they were all booked up by the time I got around to calling this morning.

I woulda just found a dealer to do it along the way, but I checked the dip stick this morning and it was shocking how dark the oil was at 10k. Driving a lot of miles in summer heat, I just didn't want to take any chances, especially on a brand new truck. That's how I ended up at the Honda dealer.

When I get home, I'll probably take it to the Toyota dealer and have them do the free one. And make sure the Honda guys didn't F anything up. They used a generic oil filter. I did ask them about that.

Might as well just go get the free one, because if I don't it'll go to waste. By the time I hit 30k we will be past the expiration date of the free Toyota care oil changes anyway.

So I'll have this one "re-done" when I get home. And I'll get my second free one at 20k. I'm trying not to stress about being out $149. Peace of mind I guess. Had I known before how dark the oil was, I'd have changed it at 5k.

I'm not gonna start a debate. But from the looks of my oil at 10k, I wouldn't wait that long on a new truck, guys. I know a lot of you say "do what Toyota engineers recommend". But jeez. My oil was so dark I couldn't even believe it.

Edit - let me rephrase that, 0W20 weight that meets the oil specifications for anything resembling a current engine can only be created with a synthetic base. If you’re finding 0W20 on a shelf somewhere it’s synthetic.
