I'd like to know where GPT and Gemini got that information. Are you able to see the source docu? @TroutMan

TroutMan, I 'm a big AI fan. It makes getting the info you want so much easier than a google search that might, or might not lead you in the right direction.

You illustrated AI's utility very well.

And ya know what? I didn't like AI, didn't need it didn't want it and just didn't... until I tried it.

I use it a lot now. As the old TV commercial used to say. "Try it. You'll like it."

The system went offline on my '21 Tacoma the night of the first major snow event in my region a few weeks ago. Sleet covered the front grill and emblem. It became available when it melted. I never use it or rely on it so I didn't care.

Can confirm in icy snowy conditions a few times my system also reported that the system was unavailable. Seem like same situation but different cause for OP. Good luck getting a resolution.

Sign of the times. Tech has gotten so prevalent in vehicles that all the shade tree mechanic can do without Chat GPT or a myriad of scan tools is change fluids. And they may computerize that (see AT fill level).

My BIL worked @ Livermore Lab in the mid 70's. One project he worked on was a no owner/driver engine compartment access car. It didn't work out because of reliability issues in the "low tech" cars of the day. Remember 1974 was the bottom of the barrel for American cars.

That was then, this now. Reliability is a whole new ball game. People are more attuned to environmental concerns so glwood is right, shade tree wrenchers are an endangered species...

Hey, anybody got a pack of matches? I gotta set the points on the Impala...

Without citing its sources, the AI answer may be 80% wrong. For one thing, the dealer tech will not go on a 2-hr ride to monitor radar temperature PID for a warranty job.

The dealer also has the option to permanently brick the radar per an official Toyota TSB so the customer won't ever come back to complain. Hopefully they won't do this without @TaylorHu 's consent.

Here's an example from last year where the dealer was unable to diagnose a misfire after 4 visits, so the vehicle owner paid $1200 for the diagnosis and repair at an independent Toyota specialist shop. The owner then fought with Toyota corporate for warranty reimbursement. Of course, that's a basic drivability problem, not an optional feature like adaptive cruise. I wonder if the OP has the stomach to follow through in a similar fashion.

I find when you ask 2-3 AIs the same question and they all come back with the same answer, you are unlikely to be seeing significant hallucinations. Ask for sources and look at them. Anyway, the sources it claims to be using are:

    A. Toyota Public Repair Manual Excerpts
    B. Public Denso Radar System Papers (Toyota supplier)
    C. Publicly Posted 4Runner, Tacoma Owner and Tech Threads in various forums
    D. General ADAS Calibration Standards

Here's what it suggests handing to the tech. Note #2. I can see why dealers might skip that step unless Toyota is paying.

    1. Retrieve ALL DRCC / PCS DTCs With Freeze-Frame Data
Even if no MIL is active.
    • Check for historical or pending: C1A10, C1A11, C1A14, C1A16, C1A2A
    • Capture:
      • Radar internal temperature
      • Radar voltage + IG voltage
      • Radar axis deviation values
      • CAN line health at the moment of dropout
Do NOT clear codes before capturing freeze-frame.

    2. Heat-Soak Reproduction Test (Required)
Most dealers skip this — it’s the only way to find this failure mode.
    • Connect Techstream logging to:
      • Radar internal temperature
      • Radar axis offset values
      • Radar communication status
      • CAN message integrity
    • Drive 60–120 minutes OR until DRCC fails
    • Verify loss of function happens at temperature, not mileage
    • Confirm axis deviation changes with temperature rise → indicates bracket drift OR thermal sensor failure
    3. Physical Radar Inspection and Alignment Measurement
Radar must be measured COLD and HOT.
    • Remove front bumper if required
    • Inspect:
      • Radar mounting bracket
      • Torque of mounting screws
      • Bracket deformation or pitch twist
      • Absorber/spacer condition
      • Damage from previous bumper work (common on CPO vehicles)
    • Measure radar pitch angle with digital inclinometer, compare to spec
    • Re-check immediately after 30–45 min heat soak (engine + AC condenser heat affects bracket)
    • If pitch moves with temperature → replace bracket.
    4. Radar Power, Ground, and CAN Harness Testing
Heat-sensitive wiring faults cause identical symptoms.

Perform both cold and hot tests:
    • Voltage drop between radar connector ground & chassis
    • Voltage drop between radar connector power & battery
    • Check for intermittent CAN-H / CAN-L resistance drift
    • Wiggle-test behind bumper after heat soak
    • Inspect harness for:
      • Corrosion
      • Rub-through behind bumper beam
      • Stretched or pinched wiring from bumper removal
    5. Radar Sensor Evaluation
If steps 1–4 check out → suspect radar ECU internal thermal drift, which is a documented behavior of Denso 77 GHz units.
    • Monitor “sensor output availability” under heat
    • Confirm “internal temperature” rises faster than normal
    • Replace radar sensor only if bracket & harness pass inspection
    6. Full Static + Dynamic Calibration
    After any repair or misalignment:
    • Perform static calibration
    • Perform dynamic calibration (on-road)
    • Verify:
      • Sensor detection range
      • Vehicle-to-vehicle distance tracking
      • Lane recognition and PCS readiness
      • DRCC remains active for > 90 minutes
    7. Final Validation
    • Test on highway speeds for 1–2 hours
    • Log radar axis and temperature continuously
    • Confirm no dropout
    • Provide printout of calibration and Techstream logs
Summary (Hand this Line to the MDT)
“The issue only occurs after long-drive heat soak, never in short drives. Please perform a heat-soak reproduction test with Techstream logging, inspect/measure the radar bracket cold & hot, verify wiring/ground continuity under temperature load, and then perform radar calibration only after bracket/wiring pass. This failure pattern matches thermal drift or bracket deformation.”

The electrical system is the most complex system on a 4Runner.

Even simple things, like adding raptor lights, can upset the apple cart, as we see from the many posts here.

Troubleshooting and repair of electrics takes training and experience that is beyond what most owners have. That's not a dig at diy mechanics. It is just a fact of the technology driven world we live in.

I think AI is going to help us find info that will make our lives easier. It certainly seems to have been a source of valuable info to show the dealers in OP's case.

Sorry to hear OP. I hope you can get it it figured out. The only thing I can think of it someone diagnosing why the sensor fails.

Nothing else to add other than this is why I get the extended warranty after shopping around for a better price. Yes I know it was a used purchase but it's still available.

I have had the same issues for months now, after installing my winch bumper. I'm seriously considering disabling mine... the TSB mentioned actually recommends disabling for ANY modifications (but it sounds like the unit is a POS even on stock vehicles):

They sell those warranties, but don't ever expect to have to honor them on a 4runner. Probably a good idea with the technology issues. Then it's getting an honest dealer and tech. Sounds like an overheating issue.

So I asked the dealer about the TSB. They’d do it for #340CAD but the light would remain on…. And they have to put warning stickers on my steering column and my owners manual. All that to remind me a feature I don’t want or need is disabled… on a truck I plan on keeping until it or I die. Should I ever need to re-enable it they’d need to replace the whole system - it’s a one way street apparently.

Plan B: Source part of a small black matte sticker, a clear piece of plastic, and a marker + a pair of scissors (a dime in parts + basic tools and ~5 minutes of your time). Custom cut it so it only covers the PCS off light from your regular seating angle. Problem “fixed” - it’s barely visible now, even at night, and classic cruise control works fine with a 2s long press on the cruise stack should I need it (rarely for long trips). One step closer to the way my 2013 used to be ;p).

After: I can say it’s a pirate now all patched up!
