Another...dashboard lights

Hey all. I have some dash light flashing like ABS, track control, 4Lo (its not in 4Lo), etc. Speedometer bouncing or not working. It has been intermittent for a couple weeks, now its staying this way - I have a short video

Note that everything else if fine, only dashlights symptom. Drives, brakes fine. Fuel consumption normal. 2014 T4R sr5 Premium 4x4 117k miles.

Checked fuses, cleaned batt connections, checked wires - visually.
Have and ODB2 reader Zurich zr13, dont get any codes, cant read ABS module or any others.
Problem started before 2 weeks before i plugged in the ODB reader, so i dont think the ODB did it. Just drove from Orlando Fl to Cancun Mex no issues. About 5k miles, in a month.

Notable
- its been so hot, that I refueled with the engine running - obviously the gas cap off, hearing the sucking in air sound with the gas cap off.
- Replaced most of the exterior and interior lights with LEDs, all work.
- i had a GPS tracker plugged in the ODB port for about 3-4 weeks before symptoms.
- Drove though a lot of heat, dust and rain in the last 4 weeks.

I have seen a dozen similar posts, looking at
- bad ground
- ABS sensor
- Wheel bearing sensor
- bad ECU(s)
- bad gas cover (seen that posted for previous gens)

Sooo trying to get as much done myself, might have to buy a voltimeter before my stuff gets here!

What else can I look at? I am so trying to avoid taking it to mechanics I dont know with no clear diagnosis... maybe i get lucky with a car-electric place that is reputable. Cheers and thanks!

Disconnect trans selector switch and see what happened. Replace that switch, connect its plug and see what happened. If same dashboard lights lit up, that is not defective trans selector switch. It's only $100 maybe $200 tops. And you gonna need replace that switch after 100k anyway.

 

Have you checked the electrical connections at the transmission and transfer case?

 

I haven't heard of anyone needing to replace that switch.

That's what I figured also. But, it doesn't seem to be as common of an issue as he implies.

I'm in the rust belt.

I see that there are threads about it. But, I'm still not buying into the idea that they all crap out at 100K.

 

I'd check the neutral safety switch also. Does the shifter feel any different going into drive, even slightly different? Has it been humid, rainy? I got a few dash lights on last week > 2018 TRD ORP, with 45K, very well maintained. Had been sitting for a week (lots of rain) I did get the code P0705. Sprayed the switch down with some WD40 and has been fine since. I did end up buying a new switch to replace before winter.

The old switch looks brand new with the exception of the tip of the shaft has some slight corrosion. I wool wax 2x a year just never knew about this little switch.
Some researching will show this is a more common problem in rainy, humid, rust belt areas for many vehicles/brands.

 

What's the status of the battery? I think a weak battery can cause flakiness. Maybe even the alternator brushes are worn to the point that charging is weak.

 

I had this issue around 150k, with the initial symptom of the shifter being stiff. I loosened it up with penetrant, then lubed with white lube. Problem fixed and so far, so good.

I don't recall having that many dash lights on though.

 

Hey all thanks. I dont have any issues with the shifter or 4/2wd. Ill check the battery again with the ODB but it was fine before. I did replace the 5 year battery already, this one has 3 years...
Is this the neutral switch?

I have exactly samessue with my 2014 trail. Still trying to figure out the issue. Did you ebver pinpoint the problem?

 

The problem has been resolved. When i took the photo of the neutral switch, i jiggle the wires and make sure it was seated in tight. Didnt attempt to pull it out until I had a replacement. But just doing that fixed the issue. Thanks everyone.
