Love Project farms tests, always well done and accurate. But ill be sticking with my AEM dry floe filter for now.

 

I change my air filter every time I change oil at about 5000 miles. I live in an extremely dusty environment. The dammed Fram filters were costing about $40 with shipping so I decided to get a K&N to save some money. Then I started reading and watching the reviews. I'm not putting the K&N filter on my 4Runner. I did find a better deal on Wix filters if I buy a few at a time. So much for saving money.

 

I put a new OEM filter in last fall. I kept the old filter which wasn’t bad, thinking I could drop it in when planning to be off road.

 

I bought a used freshly hot-rodded Honda 400EX ATV(440) that the previous owner had just put a K&N on, it was immediately removed and put on my disc sander…..running a two stage UNI foam filter now on the Honda.

 

Nice to actually see what you get when spending your money on filters.

 

I've known for decades how bad a K&N is. Never ever use them for off-road.

 

Too bad Donaldson doesn't make a drop in flat panel air filter for the 5th gen T4R, I see they have them for other Toyota light trucks. Best air filter media to get extented miles and hours on highway trucks, construction and mining equipment etc.

 

Wix for me. I change it every 15k miles

 

Too bad someone does not make a washable filter that is better at keeping out dirt than OEM. I could care less about high flow.

 

Hard to keep out more dirt than OEM, but AEM dry flow filter seems like a good option.

 

FYI, I used a K&N filter in a 1991 F-150 302 4x4. There was a pin hole in the filter. It polished the cylinder walls. MPG dropped from 14 to 9mpg!
I will warn all to forget K&N, a pin hole leak is easy to overlook. We all get busy and get distracted...look squirrel...!! And will miss the close inspection.
WIX are good and buying bulk maybe very cost effective way to go.

 

I'm intrigued by the AEM filter and will keep an eye out for more reviews. In the meantime, I have a few Wix filters to keep me on the road.

Anybody need a K&N air filter. Still in the plastic with the cleaning kit. $20 to cover shipping.

Wow. I had one and it caused my MAF sensor to go. When I looked into why that happened I found the oil on the filter gets into the MAF. Never using KN filter again. Wix for me

 

I wish there were a kit for the 4 Runner.

 

I gotta say, after 1.5 million miles of driving Toyotas, and even longer than that driving other makes, I’ve never experienced an engine failure, nor even noticeable increases in oil consumption or changes in MPG. And I’ve never paid any attention to air filter filtration rates, etc., I just get a Toyota filter and be done with it.

 

Who makes the Toyota TRD OEM filter? K&N or AEM?

I would doubt they make it themselves. Does anyone know if it's an oiled or dry filter?

 

Definitely dry.

 

Hmmm.... the only dry filter manufactures I know of are:

• AEM - DryFlow Panel Red Air Filter
• aFe - Magnum Flow Pro Dry S Panel Gray Air Filter
• AIRAID SynthaMax Non-Oiled Panel Air Filter

And the TRD filler is a different color then those.

 

I was wrong, it looks like this is a special TRD filter and does use oil.


The majority of air filters are dry though and I don't think any normal OEM air filters are oil based, you know like Fram Puralator, AcDelco, Champion, they all do a majority of dry filters.

 

When the TRD filter had the golden dye oil they were made by aFe. If I'm not mistaken I see now they use red oil. I'm not sure who makes them now.

 

My commute is very consistent.
5 days a week. I leave at 6:15am - 28.5 miles to the office, leave the office at 4:30pm - 28.5 miles home.
57 miles a day round trip.
90% highway miles at ~70/75mph.
Always fill-up at the same local Shell station - regular 87 octane fuel.

My month long-term observations: (Running each air filter for a month then switching)
The Toyota OEM and WIX air filters average 18.5mpg.
A K&N moves the average up to 20.3mpg.

I get some variability in MPG's when the fuel companies remix for winter and summer blends - but the ratios stay the same.

I will not clean and reoil a K&N and the max I will go on a K&N is 30k miles.

Since an engine is an air pump it makes some sense since the K&N has been shown to have a higher flow rate - which also would lead you down the path that the K&N is less efficient at filtering.
Less efficient air filtering has a high probability of manifesting its self as higher silica and silicate levels in an used oil analysis.
Environmental silicates (Aluminum Silicates) are what makes up rocks, clay and (Silicon Dioxide) sand. Typically this dust is about 70 microns in size.

I just ordered an AFE Power Magnum Flow Pro Dry Air Filter - so after a month of running the AFE I will report back.

Yes! I've been averaging right at 19.5MPG's. Kind of right in the middle of the OEM and the K&N filter.
The K&N has been the best performing filter - but if your concerned about the possibility of oil from the K&N containinating the MAF air flow sensor then the AFE is a good alternative.
