Doing first oil change early to flush out break-in metals is a good idea. With that said, you can't tell oil condition by color, oil goes dark well before it gets contaminated or additives used up. The only exception is if you see metal glitter when shining light at it.

I've had my 4Runner TRD ORP since September. I have 1500 miles on it. I have done two oil changes.
The second oil change I did change the filter out.
Super easy and very low cost and I enjoy it. Oil looked pretty clean on the first change and the second. So without an oil analysis the oil looks really good and fresh. I'll be changing it again probably at around 3K. Then it will be a 3K interval. Living in SoCal the Heat and turbos don't work well together.

Note to worriers...the oil in your differentials has metal chips in it and no filter. Note to everyone else - and it's not a problem.

true but thats not apples to apples. that unfiltered gear oil is not going through/to the oil galley, llifters, push rods, oil pump screen, etc on an engine. Get too much of that stuff and your going starve then engine of oil if those get blocked up.

Yup. I changed the Detroit Locker rear diff oil of my 07 Duramax Diesel at 2k miles and found two chunks of metal about the size of a pencil eraser. They sink and there was probably more but I'm at 250K miles now and no issues. GM had a history of not filling the rear diff completely back then so I double checked mine and found 1 qt. only. It takes 2 qt.
Maybe I should have made some type of warranty claim but it would have been a huge hassle if they wanted to just do the gears only and not the entire axle.
What fun it would be to have an LBZ engine in a 4 Runner!

If the engine oil is in the same condition (color wise) when you drain it for the oil change as it was when you put it in the engine, then you should be concerned. It means the engine oil is not doing it's job as far as the 'cleaning' aspect of the oil. Oil on the vehicles we have looks different, when compared. As far as Toyota's turbo being harder on oil than any other vehicles turbo... no, the heat generated by turbos is present in them all, some vehicles have different ways of cooling turbos, some rely on 'cool down' periods of say 3 mins., that was stated in previous posts. I'm sure your engine will be fine, do what the owners manual suggests, and hopefully you don't have to use your warranty. It is good that you noted the condition of the oil at drain time though. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

My good buddy just got his new tundra engine, under recall, last week. He is going to do 500,800,1500,3000 oil changes with Amsoil. If it helps someone with personal comfort, do it. You arent hurting anything. I bought my 4R from the dealership. The GM was driving it and i doubt they changed it at 600 miles. I bet the first oil change was at 10k.

nope. I would never do that. To each their own. Sometimes people do things just for their own mental well-being. Im cool with that, as i probably do that as well. Im blessed to be at that point in life where I can afford things.

Oil used in your differential and your engine and what that oil does is vastly different. In your differential it is 75W-85 gear oil that is used for surface to surface rotating gear lubrication. In your engine it is 0w20 engine oil that is also used as hydraulic fluid (variable timing, etc), fluid bearings (crank, etc.) and film lubrication on surface on surface metal (piston to cylinder wall) while operating at high temperatures, etc. The fact that both called oil is just a coincidence.

True but changing your oil as frequent as you fill up with gas seems a bit much. :)

It has been explained to you many times why people do that on a brand new car - to get break-in metal debris out of the engine as fast as possible. Stop being a turd.

    Vehophobia

The state of being paranoid or anxious about oil changes is a specific manifestation of a broader psychological phenomenon known as auto anxiety or vehophobia, which is nervousness or fear related to car maintenance or driving.

I think it needs to be it's own phobia. Lubriphobia?

It has been explained to you many times, filters are not effective at capturing these metal particles as they are too small. A filter that could capture these would not allow cold flow and end up starving the engine. You are continuing being a turd.

The oil in the '19 Honda CRV w/turbo w/80K miles 'has never been that dark'...I didn't say it was the same color coming out as going in. It gets dark at about 7,500 miles, but not as dark as the new Toy at 1,500. My '03 Tahoe 5.3l with 225K miles would get almost as dark as the Toy but I expect that. I've been in the hospital for a while and unable to drive much since the first post but I'll change it at 3K just out of curiosity, probably in a month or two. I've driven it a total of 25 miles in the last 4 weeks but should be behind the wheel soon.

I know that most turbo vehicles recommend a cool down period but there's no way to have a cool down with the Hybrid. As soon as I park it the gas engine stops. I wonder if the inability to cool down is adding to the color...oil in the turbo is getting cooked? Just wondering.

I was just mentioning color as a reference for the oil's ability to 'clean' engine components. Being a hybrid may be a problem as far as cool down time on a turbo engine, not allowing some idle time, I would imagine there is some 'heat soak' involved. Hospital stays suck, hope you're OK.

Yeah, thanks. Back surgery, fused vertebrae, rods/screws, etc. However, no sciatica with burning, needles, etc. down both legs, etc. anymore. That's good. Mobility not so good for a couple of months but so far, well worth it.

Would not worry. Most people dont even know what the W means in 0W 20, without googling it right after my post.
When was the last time you hear of an engine failure due to oil? Never, unless it had none.

OP here. I said I'd report back on the second oil change at 3,000 miles since the first at about 1,500 was so disgusting.

3,007 miles. Oil very dark but you could at partially see thru it in a glass jar, unlike the first. Changed the oil and filter and will keep an eye on it. I'll likely change it one more time at 5,000 and then every 5,000 thereafter, easy way to remember when its due, 10, 15, 20, etc. No way I'm following Toyota's 10K recommendation. For me, that means 2 changes/year at my typical driving.

I've had a lot of various vehicles in my life but with the exception of my current, old pickup truck, 2001 GMC Z71 5.3L with 140K miles, none have made oil this dirty in such a short time. Maybe this is typical for Toyota but in any case, I'll go with the 5K interval for about $35-$40 per change for Toy filter and Mobil 1, no big deal.

If its that bad new with 1700 miles imagine as time goes on. Guess 1000mi oil changes is a requirement for New 4 banger turbo 4Runners.
