Day run through Anza Borrego, Sandstone Canyon… Also saw a herd of other rigs

 

Camping near Four Peaks.

 

We spent a few days around Comb Ridge in Bears Ears National Monument this weekend.

A familiar spot to stretch legs, absorb crisp fresh air and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Wolves howled from nearby and a large golden eagle flew low overhead. Lots of snow, as revealed by the front wheels, and ice. A memorable outing.

 

No pics of the 4Runner in a scenic location but I used it to go to one (The Wave, AZ)

It's only about a 6-7 mile roundtrip from the parking lot but there are a lot of other things to see around as well for those who dont mind hiking a bit more.

Yes a friend of mine did!
Went there about 10 years ago but didnt actually get to go to the wave. The permit was from a friend of a friend and their group was maxed out so some of us did the nearby hikes that didnt require a lottery permit and I've been wanting to go back ever since...

This time around, one of my friend has been trying to get the permit every month for over a year now with no success but another one got it first try! Luck of the beginners haha but at least we were able to bring him with us.
Weather was perfect (40s in the morning and 60s by mid afternoon).

 

^ I've been out to White Pockets but no chance yet for The Wave. When I get retired, we might just go camp up there and try the walk up every day until we get in.
We can always do that and Paria and Buckskin while we wait...
Have you been out to Edmaiers?

 

We wanted to but ran out of time so we'll have to go back for this one and a few others (quite a lot to do in the area). Instead we did Buckskin Gulch Petroglyphs since we were closer to it

We're getting another load of fresh snow these days, so a bit of white contrast to all the colorful pictures here





Here I turned around because the road was almost impossible to see and the snow was getting deeper and deeper. And no one with me to to dig me out or pull me out...

Stopped at White Sands and Vermillion Cliffs on my way to Las Vegas. (also ran out to White Pocket which was pretty cool)

 

Gulo had to work climbing out of the valley because of the abundant fresh snow. A first attempt in 4L was unsuccessful and involved some backwards-sideways sliding in potentially precarious conditions. So an old school approach was neccessary: 4H, TRAC and VSC off, more speed (i.e., momentum) and a healthy application of throttle (i.e., RPMs). The 4.0L sounded awesome tearing up the long steep hill.

 

Took a nice drive in Grand County, CO. Found a couple of short trails.

 

Idaho Springs, CO

 

A little backpacking and impromptu car camping trip. Had planned on backpacking for 2 nights, but cut the 2nd hike short and decided to car camp instead of drive home. Ended up at East Flats dispersed campground near Angelus Oaks (southern california/ san bernardino mountains). Neat place. Quite a few people there but there was a lot of spots. I grabbed one and, lucked out, when the guy across from me, in a better spot, ended up leaving. Drove over and parked the 4Runner and came back and carried the tent over.

Took out the camper this weekend... paddled 11 miles of the New River in western NC.
