Shoulder seasons??

 

Early spring and late fall when snow is still around in varying degrees and temperatures are mild but occasionally dip down. ATs are still useful but can be sketchy if conditions are severe, and this happens. Also the warmer temperatures that occur aren’t fitting for winter tires. It’s a pain running 2 sets but safety is paramount! Non-winter tires in extreme cold temperatures are frighteningly ineffective. Like running on ice in dress shoes.

So as to avoid further confusion I amended the relevant post.

 

Whereabouts was this? Pretty country.

 

The Rocky Mountains, of which of course are shared with a few states. Yes, these geological formations and the landscape are wonderful.

 

I've lived in both Alberta and BC, and was looking for something a bit more specific. But if it's a state secret, no worries.

 

Ghost River. Well known but not overrun. Quite mild with lots more challenging terrain nearby but scenic and peaceful.

 

The 4R at a windmill at the edge of Nevada's Black Rock Desert. Big piles of "evidence" around proved that the wild mustangs water here.

I sure hope so! That salt out there is extremely corrosive!

 

Nice! And yep, as Yamahamer said, the salt is super corrosive, and tough to get all of it off. I've driven a couple of my motorcycles out onto the Bonneville flats, but never again. But it does make for fun photos.

 

I spent this past weekend on the western end of the White Rim Trail- mainly so I could spend a night at the Candlestick Camp since it's the only campsite along the White Rim that I had never stayed at before.

Was it difficult to obtain a permit, and were there many people on the trail?

 

It was not difficult to obtain a permit at this time of the year, but there's always a chance that weather can cancel the trip. This was my 3rd or 4th time trying to get to Candlestick at this time of the year, but the previous attempts were thwarted by rain/snow/ice. We only saw one other vehicle the entire weekend.

Hah! Gotta get thru the potholes and many miles of forest service roads to reach the MUD. I was told my first time, to treat every puddle on the mud flats as if it’s 10’ deep (cuz it may be)

Understandable! I say the same thing to folks who like to drive through water crossings. Are rocks and boulders more interesting to you?

 

Yes. That's more up my alley.

 

Mud is fun until it comes time to cleaning it off.

 

Yeah. That's the thing.
For me at least, the fun is not enough to offset the pain.
