Not sure if this is remotely a possibility, couldn't find any threads on it. Has anyone done an engine swap on a 5th gen? $5000+ for a magnuson is some pretty cash considering what's available out there for crate motors. But more importantly, I'm wondering if the 5.7 from a tundra would fit in the front of a 4Runner. If it fits then there's maybe a way...

I highly doubt it will fit. That 5.7 is huge from side to side

4.6 seems like an easier option. I guess just getting a GX460 would be even easier.

Have not seen much for performance mods out there. I would like to see more myself. Any built motors? Bore and stroke, cams? Considering the age of the platform you think there would be more.

It’s a great idea if you’re mechanically inclined. I wouldn’t mess up a beautifully built 5th gen, though. I guess that if you’re able to find a 5th gen T4R that’s been totaled. But, the body is still good. You could probably do or attempt to do an engine swap. Maybe, do some body and frame modification and replace the tranny as well. It may just be possible.

The costs associated with such a modification would be significantly high. You would have far exceeded the $6k for a Magnuson supercharger by then. It would, however, be very interesting to see the end results.

Cost is all relative, the cost of forced air In a 4runner is very expensive compared to the performance gains. Like everything else these days, you will most likely have to change out more then just the motor as everything is all connected with the electronics. There are companies out there that sell running drive traines on pallets that get pulled from wrecked vic's ( think hell cat, gt500). Granted these are for gear heads that want power.

Someone did an LS3 swap in to a 5th gen and actually got it running properly, only info I can find is on IG.

The old adage is to figure $100 per 1hp. For the ~80HP gain of a S/C, that figure actually comes in a bit lower for the Magnuson, assuming a self install. Granted if you want the warranty that Magnuson supplies, you'll have to pay for the install, which then will probably put you closer to that $100/hp.

I just spoke to someone who made the swap. Supercharged V8 from a Tundra... The drivetrain swap took about 2 weeks, but the wiring took him 3 months. (Splices were soldered and heat shrinked.)

The main issue was different regions of manufacture, therefore, you're trying to merge two different versions of buss communication between the modules.

Being a licensed electrician with experience on instruments, aircraft and more, this to me was an awesome accomplishment. My hat's off to anyone willing to take on a project such as this.

You would think swapping in the lexus v8 from the 4runners brother would be easy. Does toyota sell crate engines?

I'm hoping we can swap in an electric motor when they force those useless things on us...

There is a company doing Toyota diesel swaps on Tacos and 4Runners. For only $32,500!!!
The vehicle is not included in that price.

    https://dieseltoys.com/4runner-diesel

For you doomsday preppers - diesel stores better long term than gasoline. It's also not explosive like gasoline.

Good luck, anything can become a reality with enough money.

I’d rather squeeze one into a Camary and make it a sleeper.

I can’t say I know enough about diesel but 165hp vs 270hp and yeah the torque is usually higher but 60 lb. Torque does not seem enough to justify the change so I would stick with the mag super charger and call it good.

As soon as I read they were putting a twin turbo 3.5 in the Tundra I started thinking about that swap. Maybe by the time my 4.0 croaks there will be a few of those around. I have not seen one, but it SHOULD fit.

I believe these should have had a V8 option or at least a V8 option on the top-tier TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro models.

But if they did, no one would spend $20k more for a Lexus GX

    Not sure I agree.

The extra $$ for a GX includes all the accessories we mostly don't have in our 4Runners. I'd gladly spend $5k more for the option of a higher-hp/torque V8
