So first post here. Bought the wife a 2019 SR5 premium back in April. I don't drive it that much at all (mine is a 2018 Tacoma) Just recently went out for dinner and took hers. I noticed that the 4wd selector doesn't light up. Is this a normal thing? Meant to bring the manual with me here to work but forgot. Thanks for all the help

I am no expert; however I believe that you have a problem.
Others please advise (we bought in 3/19 & family problems kept us in so I am unsure).
Every time (to my recollection) I put it in 4h it illuminates a dash light (95% sure).
If you are in a snow possible area; take it in ASAP!

    Do you own a limited?
Knob is only in limited. Ours is a manual shift.
    Please clarify for more help.
    Thanks.

To my knowledge this is par for the course. No illumination behind the knob for the selector.

Knob is on the limited and SR5. The TRD OR, ORP and Pro has a manual transfer case.

Like I said, the Offroad’s in both trim packages and the Pro’s have a lever. SR5 and Limited is a selector switch

I believe that behind the knob there is a light. Since we own a manual transfer case I cannot confirm. 4x4runner is more educated than I.
    Sorry.

@4X4Runner should he not have a indicator light on the 4x4 knob that illustrates when engaged. I may be completely wrong.
    Thanks to all!

On my 2017 SR-5 P there is no light at the knob, the indicator is displayed on the instrument panel.

No light on the 4wd knob itself. It’s very dimly illuminated from above by a little blue LED in the ceiling. The LED dims/gets brighter when you spin the little wheel that dims the dash lights.

Are we all confusing knobs with levers? Just trying to get this straight...
Is it a turn style knob like the climate control or is it an actual manual shifter lever like an old pickup?
    Sorry for the confusion.

It is a turn style knob.

If it is the turn style, there is no illumination on that entire assembly?
I don't own one. I just figured that in the middle of the night it would be illuminated for convenience. Even crawl control & terrain management are illuminated...
Just my experience. I don't understand how they expect you to drive blind (2x4 vs 4x4). Then again the manual version is only a pull back to get into 4h maybe they do rely upon our muscle memory!

Just guessing. I found a tiny led in the overhead panel that shines down towards the shifter. Maybe they count on that allowing people to see the knob:notsure:

I believe that is a map light. Our old Infiniti had one & we loved it.
I am very glad to see one in the 4runner!
Otherwise, it must be that dope light that @nimby is always looking for. ;) LMAO

It’s not a map light. It’s just to very dimly light the cup holders, shifter, 4wd control, etc. Hard to even notice it unless you’re in pitch blackness.

Note: You can turn it on or off with Carista.

The SR5 4wd knob doesn’t really need an embedded light, although it’d be nice. You simply turn the knob back and forth for 2wd/4hi. That’s it. The knob won’t turn to where it shouldn’t be. So you can’t really make a mistake.

This is what it looks like. It looks like there should be some kind of light coming from the knob itself but I don’t recall it ever being lit on any of my friends 4Runners.

This is what’s in the SR5 and Limited models.

Hmmm I have the knob like above in the '18 but I thought it lit I'll have to check sometime don't have it at work today. Definitely have the little 4x4 display in the dash but realize the poster is asking about the knob/shifter handle itself.

I nominate this thread for the Homer Simpson "You Take Forever To Say Nothing" award.

Jesus - the guy only wanted to know if the knob indicator lights up or not and he gets 20+ posts speculating about this, that, and the other, if a knob is the same as a lever, console & map lights, and freaking Carista.

I was going to say something pithy about the above post, but in the spirit of the season, let me just say it's fair to assume that others who have posted in this thread are either old guys with too much time on their hands, or 'yota nuts who seek to modify, expand, and prolong even the most inane issue.
