There is no way to tell body style from the series. The 40 series came in pickup and wagon, same with the 70 series. All the series we got in the US from the 60 series up were the wagon form.

^You must have seen "family tree" diagrams like this before? 40-series pre-dates the branching. 70-series regardless of body style are part of the "heavy duty" series. 55-series and up are part of the "station wagon" series:

The above diagram was made in 2021 for the LC nameplate's 70th anniversary. Some people have since updated it:

Neither the 200- nor the 300-series are part of the "heavy duty" series; they are "station wagons".

A better term would be Luxury Series because they all fall under station wagon. Station wagon describes all of these vehicles because they are all vehicles with a fixed roof and rear seats with a back end that doesn't truncate (taper like a sedan). It's about as broad as calling the 200 series part of the SUV series, they're all SUVs.

I see this thread has turned into another "3JOH22A against the world" type situation. ROFL.

Your perceived distinction between the LS and Continental is not shared by the market, as both models sold equally poorly.

The names of the "family tree" branches are official, and reflected in early Toyota documentation. For example: [IMG]

They're also used by reference sites like: https://toyotatimes.jp/en/spotlights/landcruiser_70th/040.html

Not something you or I would change.

By "world" you mean the echo chamber, which doesn't represent the buying public.

And the "J" stands for "Jeep".

Usually you can go down octane when using direct injection so I wonder why they call for 91 in some vehicles. Toyota called for 91 years ago with the FJ but then took it out of the manual for whatever reason.

technically only the "BJ" series were called "Jeep", the real name was "Toyota Jeep BJ" and it was derived from they stealing/acquiring a bantam GP (willys mb). the "Land Cruiser" name came about due to toyota trying to compete with the "Land Rover" so they played word games and changed "Rover" to "Cruiser"

pretty interesting history from start to current on the whole LC timeline

I think he was just pointing out that the "J" in the Land Cruiser chassis codes stands for Jeep. Just like the "B" indicates that it had a B series engine.

Is that similar to the Lexus 700 that we get?

I'd be interested to see how LC300 with the same 4L V6 in 4Runner would drive.
In Asia 99% of the time we get the diesel. For LC300 I think they went from 4.5T diesel to 3.3T diesel. For Australia looks like they only have 1 engine option, the 3.3T diesel.

I also heard for new Lexus LX700 now you can run just the gas engine if hybrid system fails. Looks like they learn their lesson from the LC250 became a brick when one owner drive over a muddy puddle that killed the hybrid motor. But I don't think that system is available in the LC300.

That particular trim is $150k+ AUD but is the only configuration to get a front locker in the LC300 in Australia.

Yep, the LX - albeit they're all on the TNGA-F platform now. I'm betting someone out there will try to swap the front fascia on. (Eventually)

150k AUS is only 94K US. The cheapest trim they sell is, confusingly to us, the GX trim for 104k AUS which is 65k USD.

    LOL @ LC250 here.

Yes, seems like identical engine specs but the interior of the lexus is upgraded to the T. Hence the price difference.

I don’t understand the luxury off-road market. None of the people buying these things new are ever taking them offroad.

It's because we as Americans have been well trained to be consumers who only upgrade and never go back down the consumption pyramid. Once they raised the floor of the LC200s to 80k level it's only logical for Toyota to discontinue the LC full size here and herd the consumers who are desperate for a new LC to pay Lexus price.

Case in point. I recently bought a new Nissan Versa with the 5 speed(since you can no longer get a Toyota FWD car with manuals in the US). The salesman was visibly confused why I was buying a econobox that doesn't even have cellular hotspot or sunroof when I already have a nearly new ORP that's only missing the MTS. My explanation that I in fact enjoy driving small, cheap, nimble cars for my occasional trip to the office during off peak hours did nothing to explain the situation. In general he is right, people who arrive in 4Runners are probably looking to upsize to say, a Sequoia or an Armada.

The thing is I don't care what people think of me rolling around in a 20 year old manual corolla or a Versa. I am comfortable enough that I don't need to constantly roll around in my most expensive whip to assure myself. But enough people still view their vehicle as the one thing that tells the world who they are, such that Toyota is making an absolute killing through their shopping habits, and I am happy for everyone who gets what they wanted. If everyone is a saver the economy won't run. So I encourage people to live their best life as long as they can swing it.

We get counseling and psychology advice here too. Well said. I am one of those buyers....been so tempted to get a landcruiser but reality hits and I say why...why pay such a big price for a vehicle that will stay at the office and at home parked. So I window shop and dream about it while I can.

    Gang,
Ok, so I think I am highjacking this thread and maybe messing with the LC300 here. I am in Australia and no, I ain't off-roading here. Just working my tail off so that I can pay for my next mod. But as I was looking around i kept seeing this Landcruiser and kept saying how come we don't see this one in the US, and the assuies...went like, we know more about offroading than you guys do, and we don't overpay for Lexus type units. One aussie...went and said, Lexus stands for. Luxury, Export, US. I was like...dang....in any event I couldn't help myself and went to a dealer here in Perth (western Australia) just to see. Funny enough, nobody came out to help me until later...and one sales guy said....we didn't know if you were a homeless person trying to get in the car or if you were lost. But here are the keys in case you want to try!!! It was funny. They probably saw my jaw dropping and me lurking around. So yes, the LC300 - if I could afford it i would get one. Didn't seem as roomy as I thought. I went for the hood right away...and then read the specs carefully and yes this is the same as we would get on the LX platform, but of course we would over pay for the damn Lexus name and the extra stuff inside. Here is a few shots.

4 cyl turbo, but diesel. Same as what they gave us in the US (gasoline).

Toyota is just giving us the same treatment as the pharma guys....you want brand name and a nice box? Here is the price + , you want generic, Same performance less price. Similar thinking as I see it.

Nice. It must be so much better without the wasted space with battery.

even with the heavier diesel motor probably significantly lighter than the LC250 here...
