Hello. I am not a 4 Runner owner yet. I’m in the market and I felt this was a good place to inquiry. I’ve owned a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4 cylinder manual pickup. My first truck ever and I loved it. Because of medical reason I could no longer shift / clutch using my left foot, so sold in 2015. It was like selling the family dog...still bothers me. Anyway I’ve been driving a 2000 Lexus RX300. I can drive automatics. Getting in and out of “tall” vehicles also an issue. Trying to decide on a 4Runner / Highlander. Can’t utilize a pickup. I’m 65, don’t need off road capability at all but will be driving around town and extended distances a few times a year. Don’t want a sedan.
    I’m thinking a scaled back 4Runner?
    Thinking hard in Indiana.

    Welcome aboard,

I love my 4Runner but when you don’t need the off road capability you should go with the highlander, getting in and out should be more easy and you definitely go further with the same amount of gas
And I learned they’re great, reliable vehicles as well. As I said, I love my 4runner but it was the first vehicle ever I tried to leave emotions out of the decision processes

    Welcome.

Coming from a Lexus and not needing off road capabilities screams Highlander to me.

They ride more comfortably and are more fuel efficient.

    Good luck in your search!

Highlander for sure... Also, in my opinion there much nicer "appointed" inside, more modern features. I went with the 4R for all the reasons you may not (not medically) but I liked the truck "boxy" look. Plenty of Highlanders out there may not be hard to find someone who owns one or maybe if you could find a rental for a week and put it through its paces.

Get the highlander. It's lower to the ground and is a better commuter vehicle for multiple reasons.

Agree with others that have posted on this.
If you don't need the off road capability of the 4Runner, go with the Highlander.
Very smooth riding and will be easier to get in and out of.

Sounds like you need the Highlander. Wife's one is only 4 years old and thinking of getting a new one just for the upgrades.

Given your scenario, I would choose a Highlander as well. I chose the 4R not because I need it to go offroad, but because I liked the fact that this SUV doesn't act look/act every other SUV/Crossover on the road. In fact most of the reasons I chose the 4R are the reasons most people won't choose a 4R, haha.

Test drive them both. A 2wd 4R is still a great vehicle, but both Highlander and 4R offer AWD (or similar) versions. They're very different vehicles and unless you love them both (which leaves you with no bad choices), you'll probably know quickly which is the one for you.

In your position...Highlander. I love my 4Runner-it's been my 'dream car" for years and it's great around town but it's not fun on highway trips. My wife is wanting to trade her Camry in and I'm trying to talk her into the Highlander so we'll have the best of both worlds.

Highlander or maybe even check out the Rav4 if you don't really need the room the highlander provides. Cheaper too.
