Diesel is being banned in Europe left and right. It is not a huge sale in US/Canada due to high initial cost and all systems and more. It is widely regarded as a heavy polluter around the world. The whole industry is slowly dropping not only Diesel engines, but gas altogether.
The 4R does amazing on gas in the wild. There are other vehicles for the purpose of towing heavy loads, where a diesel is needed.
The answer is NO. They do not belong together.

That's interesting, considering 90% of the vehicles I saw there recently were all diesel.

I would love to trade in mine if we get a diesel.

Growing up in Asia (Sri Lanka) things like "Kilometers per Liter" and "Range" is a big deal. Petrol (Gas) SUVs / Trucks had really bad market as they were the worst in that department. Yes Petrol (Gas) engines has better acceleration but was not a requirement in our countries. So petrol suv /trucks were cheap. Diesel vehicle was in high demand we even had a diesel tax at the time of purchase.

To tell you how much people love diesel there were come people who converted petrol (gas) cars to diesel.

With the small fuel tank 4Runners have a 2.8 turbo diesel is the perfect engine imo. Even the Lexus GX equivalent Toyota Prado comes with 2 diesel tanks totaling 150 liters (39.6 gallons) with 2.8 turbo diesel.

So yes, a big diesel fan here...:)

I hope Toyota consider diesels since we are getting more and more diesels like Wrangler, Gladiator, Tahoe and few other small trucks with the smaller 3L turbo diesel engine.

I know Hilux is the easiest candidate to bring in but I don't think US manufacturing would allow it to be a competition for the Tacoma. Unless they get the Hilux power train for Tacoma.

I really wish we can have the Land cruiser 70 series diesel. But the LC70s we had in Sri Lanka was very basic, even the single din headunit was optional. Comfort is no where near a 4runner. It might need lot of improvement for the US market.

Find a rust-free 2003 or older 4Runner and drop an ALH engine and 6 speed manual in. That would be a fun little rig. Probably close to 30 mpg on road and tons of low end torque for crawling.

Toyota will never bring new ones here.

If you take GM ad your market significant automaker, I have a bridge to sell you.
I won’t post links to article all over the net. To each his own. I strongly believe diesel is a dying breed, especially after the VW diesel gate. Send me a link with new VW diesels. Show me a link with any new diesels in Europe.

There wont be a diesel, if there is it isn't being sold in the US. Even then, I don't see Toyota introducing a diesel in a first world country, it seems even less likely in countries that normally got diesels because of how they are being phased out.

I don't even know what engine Toyota would use. I don't think they have an engine that could be put in the 4runner in the US market without going through the red tape. I see no reason for them to do it, I am 99% sure we wont see it offered with a diesel.
The time to buy a diesel in a Toyota was 40 years ago when they sold it in very few pickups.
