I have seen so many conflicting answers when it comes to this tire size. I have a 2021 SR5 with a 2 in lift. Other than minor trimming, will I be able to run a 285/70 without having to do a BMC? I don't want to have to do a BMC. Can someone please tell me a definite answer? I have had two different tire shop owners in my hometown tell me two different answers as well. I have stock TRD rims.

There is so definite answer. Trial and error, either commit or play it safe and get 275’s. With that said, having a wheel that is close to 0 offset and isn’t wider than 8in should probably work.

    Exactly.
Some get by with just a lift and others have to get a BMC. Only way to tell is by getting them installed lol. Kind of sucks, but it is what it is. Mine needed a BMC in order to fit them. Are you thinking KO2's?

I have heard they have balancing problems for 4runners. I was thinking either Falken Wildpeak M/T or Toyo Open Country AT 3's

I have Falken Wildepeak 275's on the SR5 snowflake wheels. 2" lift with a winch and bumper, skids and sliders. Sits about 1" higher than stock. Off-roading during a full lock turn and the suspension compresses, the right front rubs a tiny bit. Same in reverse backing into the driveway. Full lock and roll over that 'lil bump, it just barely touches.

The balancing issues were/are with the Falkens WP's. I have had zero issues. Tires have 20,000 miles. I recommend them 100%
If the KO2's have issues, this is the 1st I have read about it.

Personal opinion is 275's aren't worth it. 275's are barely bigger than the stock 265's, so if you're ditching 265's to go up one size it's not a very good bang for buck.

Doing some fenderwell massaging isn't a bad thing. BMC, fender liner adjustment, trimming mudflaps isn't going to hurt anything. It's better to do it than not regardless of tire size.

I've been running 285's for almost 11 years on a Tacoma and 4Runner and haven't done much more than mudflap trimming. A lot of it depends on tire offset/backspace to what kind of modification you're in for. Stealth Custom Series wheels does a great job of putting the tire exactly where you need it for minimal modification.

I have a -12mm offset wheel, 2 inch lift up front (supposedly. Not sure now with the added weight to the truck). I am running 285/75/17 and they have some rubbing backing up at full lock out when I hit hills a bit faster than slow and the front of the 4runner goes down it will rub a little. However, I really like them. I previously had Toyo OC AT3’s and they were an awesome tire in most every condition. I changed to mud terrain tires and they are more noisy but they look beefy and do really well off-road.

disclosure: I do have a BmC and had to get rid of the front mudd flaps and some trimming. But that is about it at this point.

Man, I am just leery when it comes to the BMC. That is one mod that I can not do myself. 275 does limit what type of tire and brand you can get but I would rather be able to run my new tires without having to worry about rubbing on the frame or upper control arms. I plan on running the stock TRD rims so I am thinking that these rims will be ok with just fenderwell trimming and eliminating mudflaps.

If you had a reputable 4x4 shop nearby... I would think a BMC and fender adjustment would be an easy no-brainer for them if you really want to go up to 285s.

I've been fortunate to not have any issues with KO2's. I had them on my '18 and currently on my 22'. No balancing issues, no steering wheel shakes, and they are great off-road!

Do you have experience with power tools? I did the BMC myself with an angle grinder. Piece of cake.

I would advise against an MT unless you really want/need them, they're harder to fit and sometimes balance weird. In addition to the extra weight, cost and sometimes road noise and wandering.

Both that and the Wildpeak are fantastic tires, with the Wildpeak being a tad more on the aggressive side. I personally would avoid BFG due to their degradation of quality over the the last 10 years.

I just put 265 70 17 Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus on my 2019 ORP. Only had them on for a few days but so far I'm really liking them. I have the stock TRD rim. They don't have a 275 but they do have a 285.

    Do you have UCAs?

Do you happen to know what your caster is?

You can absolutely run 285/70/17's with Pro wheels without a BMC.

You need to be able to get your caster forward.......probably around the +3.5 mark. However, you might not be able to do that with a 2" lift and stock UCA's.

But to run your caster this high, you'll need to do the fender liner mod (way easier than a BMC).

This. I've lifted two 5th gens both with UCAs and TRD wheels. Had to trim the front bumper lip ever so slightly. But with caster pulled forward, no need for BMC.

To follow up on what I said above.....

There's still a chance you can get away with no BMC, 285's and your stock UCA's.

What you'll want to do is:

    1) Fender liner mod
    2) Get an alignment and have them max out your caster (tell the alignment shop you're hoping to get it in the mid +3's if possible).
    3) Put your 285's on and see if you rub the body mount (or not)

    If you do rub:

    4) Decide wether to get UCA's or do the BMC.

It's also possible that you just rub the mudflap, in which case you can remove, trim, or massage with a heat gun.

Now granted these are not TRD rims that I took off my 2011 SR5, however they are wildpeaks in 285/70/17 mouted on my 2022 Trail Special with 2” lift in front. They clear the rear Mudflap And body moint just fine and the front inner wheel well liner just fine locked to left and right. I also did not have to push the wheel well liner forward at all.

Those wheels are a different offset than the Pro wheels. The lower offset changes things.

Correct, in the end it looks like a fender trim and liner push will be needed tonPro wheel owners.

Did you have the caster adjusted as was suggested or have to make any of the mods?

Has anyone had a 4Runner with 3” suspension lift and tan 265s? I have that in now but am sitting at tire store now waiting on 285s to be put on. I was just wondering If there is a noticeable difference in height?

idk if it’s because I look at it all day everyday but often times even with lift I feel I’m the same height as stock runners.
