285/70/17 Installed today

    Well, I did not wait for Tuesday. installed the Bf Goodrich 285/70/17 KO 2 - E rated today.

    Here is the weird thing, I have no rubbing at all; I thought they put the wrong tires on it; no 285/70/17 it is, I have a lot of space left I could have put 295 on it, I think. This is so weird. The rig rides great.

    Anyone has an explanation for this?

    All input is appreciated.

    I'm really surprised you don't have any rubbing with those wheels/tires. Sounds like your alignment is spot on perfect.

    Do you happen to know the caster number on your alignment? Should be listed on your spec sheet (if the alignment shop gave you one).

    Back up at full lock and apply the brakes to see if you are really good to go. That and compression while four wheeling are the real tests for rubbing.

    Hello Jake,
    I do not have the caster number right now; I'll ask him on Tuesday and let you know. My overall lift is about 4". I had the Bf Goodrich KO before 37" and they were excellent; hence the KO 2 provides a very nice ride on the 4runner, a lot better than the stock tires, for sure.

    The KO2’s are on the smaller end of 285’s. They come out to around 32.7” in diameter I believe. While you may have no rubbing while driving, you might rub on trails if you go off-road. Of course, worries about tires rubbing is subjective as not everyone here takes their rigs off the pavement. Also saw you have a total of about 4” lift upfront. Once your springs settle you may have rubbing issues on the front and/or possibly the mudflaps.

    ICON external reservoir 2.5” with SPC UCAs.

    It’s 3” in the back and over 2 3/4” in the front with BMC and the fenders cut out.

    Because of how the truck is designed, that makes the frame almost perpendicular to the ground even though the body looks like it has a rake to it.

    Nice one. My first choice was white, they did not have any on the lot. So, I settled for blue.

    Correct, the KO 2’s are 32.76 which is about in the middle of the 285’s. I’m an avid off-roader for more than 40 years, in the last 26 years I drove most trails in the 4 corners area, mostly rock. This is my first 4runner so I don’t know much about it. I learned a lot here in a month, with many thanks to all the helpful people here on this forum.

    The 4runner is a wonderful vehicle to go off-road having all the features rear locker different crawl modes etc.; unfortunately, approach and departure angle are not that great as well ground clearance. So, we try to make this a better suited vehicle, more up to the task.

    Totally agree on approach and departure angles, I’ve had my fair share of instances experiencing that aspect:annoyed: 4runner looks killer though! That blue color really pops in the sun. You’ll have a blast with it if you chose to do some trails with it. You’ll find the 4runner to be pretty darn simplistic when it comes to other vehicles that are similar to its class, which can be appreciated for a repair and use aspect.

    No worries. Whenever you get to it.

    If you find it doesn't rub after reversing down driveways and offroading, then your caster number will be something to take note of for those running pro wheels and 285's.

    Hello Jake,

    I already did, I have the franklin mountains 15 minutes away from my house, did a little bit. I drove backwards of a more or less 20-degree slope full lock no rubbing, drove down some obstacles no rubbing.

    I will go back next week with someone to take pictures, which I will post, so, members will have a better Idea.

    I am not familiar with the 4runner, hence, I think a lot has to do with the entire setup and alignment.

    Didn’t have the time to give the rig a full workout; next week we will see. I will be able to give a better assessment.

    The guy that owns the alignment shop does all the work for body shops dealing with cars that have been badly damaged. Maybe he has the magic touch. LOL

    He must! That's pretty impressive.

    People can sometimes fit 285's with the stock Offroad and SR5 wheel offsets, but you don't hear about 285's with Pro wheels fitting without rub very often at all. In fact, some people run into rubbing with 265's and Pro wheels.

    Did you get a snowflake or the regular ones?

    I installed mind during Covid lockdown and didn’t feel like driving all the way out to Tahoe to get the snowflakes because apparently they don’t stock snowflake tires outside of snow zones in California.

    Hello Jake,

    I will ask the alignment guy all info about the settings and post them on this thread. Maybe we can help other members save some money and struggle.

    This is a nice setup for the money, total $2.300.00 that is with the tires included.

    Installation was done by a body shop $410 alignment included; they took the 4runner across the street to the alignment shop.

    Btw. Discount Tire had a special on the Bf Goodrich 285/70/17 – C-Rated – I paid $900.00 for the set tax included.

    When I upgraded to the E rated KO2s, I noticed a lot more felt vibration through the steering wheel on rough pavement. With the factory tires the poor job Caltrans does with CA roads was less noticeable. Thankfully the Dobinson MRA suspension kept the actual ride comfort smooth and unchanged. With the KDSS and stiff side walls, driving on canyon roads is like riding on a rail.

    No vibration here.

    I have not taken the rig to task, like driving on washboard and rocky trails, which will tell the story; hence, on the street and Freeway it’s a treat. Truly impressed with the Dobinsons suspension.

    Hello LandCruiser,

    This is really a nice lift. Hard to understand the differences, there must be an explanation. You replaced the upper control arms because of rubbing on the factory UCA’s, you had to add Spidertrax wheel spacers as well?

    I have a little less than 2" space (Tire to UCA's no matter the angle of the wheel with Factory UCA's). I try to wrap my head around all this, cannot understand it.

    Like I said you have a nice lift, expensive as well.

    The aftermarket SPC upper control arms will rub with 285 tires and the stock wheels, there is not enough backspacing so you have to put spidertrax on.
