I just started watching the new Expedition Overland Series and they are talking about doing 25K mile oil changes with some new Mobil 1 oil for their trip. Some of you may lose your minds if you watch.

I'd be more concerned about the 3rd gen Tundra engine than the oil.
Just a bad combination in general.

I watched that as well. I personally don't get the appeal of oils engineered to go 10k, 15, 25k miles. Frequent oil changes regardless of weight, brand, whatever have got to be the best way to get eyes on the underside of your truck to inspect it, and to prolong engine life. At 25k intervals most people would be changing the oil once a year, which wouldn't make me lose my mind per se, but seems like a poor decision to me.

Why so frequently? My ass is so muscular it can wipe itself.

Comparatively, 25K oil changes are worse idea.

That’s nuts. A DIY oil change is less than $30. One assumes a rough and tumbler overlander bro is able to do so.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 36 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 36yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.

Me too. I would plan on leaving the tundra in the middle of the desert when the engine seizes.

These guys are always traveling with no bathroom and no shower so they just might be doing that too. They must smell horrible by the end of these trips.

I was always told that oil doesnt get bad BUT it gets dirty. Did they happen to say anything about the filter?

They show it being changed. I think they said it was a Mobil 1 but otherwise nothing special.

Towards the end of episode 2 they pull oil samples from the trucks at 5K miles and the oil looks pretty dark already.

Over kill protection for those who prepare for the worst. Regular non synthetic oil is about as good as synthetic lubrication if you change it on time, but that doesn't always happen so having synthetic is a nice insurance. Then having 20k+ Synthetic just incase of the apocalypse or zombie attack is the ultimate peace of mind. :bananadead:

Even with oil engineered to last that long, I wouldn't really feel comfortable doing that long of an interval. I feel much better just using whatever oil meets the spec and changing at the intervals specified in the manual.

On average, it would be closer to 2 years.

No they changed the filter at the start of their trip which they anticipate to be 25K miles.

The 1GR in the 2nd gen Tundra has demonstrated in real-world conditions to survive 98k miles without oil changes, so :notsure:

Can it be done? Absolutely, that's why it's a TOYOTA and not a range rover.

Should it be done? Probably better not to if you spent you hard earned money and want to minimize the risks of having issues later down the road.

I don’t understand why the XO guys don’t put a real slide in camper or tow an RV trailer. They aren’t doing any serious off roading anymore and having a bathroom and decent bed would be a game changer for these long trips.

    Mobil 1 filter added
Oil loses viscosity over time, from off-gassing as it gets hot. As oil loses its viscosity, it loses its ability to protect metal parts from making contact. There are oil additives that are supposedly able to handle much longer durations, you may have seen some videos in the past where oil was drained and the engine run at high RPM for a while and the engine would still not lock up. There are additives to oils that supposedly adhere to the metal surfaces that wont wash off and help with lubricity. I assume this Mobil 1 oil has a heavy dose of additive package that is meant to help the oil stay stable and prevent metal to metal contact.

It was surprisingly dark going in too. But yes at 5100 miles it was far from clear.

They took the 3 trucks and changed the oil 3 times back to back to make sure they flushed all the old oil out. They used a new Mobil 1 oil filter. They anticipate the oil they put in, and the oil filter to last the entire 25,000 mile trip.

One of the things i noticed. First episode, "12 gallons will give us about two weeks worth of water"... wait... what... You guys just drinking it? No spit baths or quick showers? I watched one and two and didnt see any mentions of an emergency shitter or toilet paper in any of the 3 rigs. Are they staying in hotels when they can and the roof top tents only for when they cant get to a hotel? No showers at all? Doesnt make sense, i would assume they are hitting places during the trip that allow them to wash up and rest. 5 months in trucks with no showers and no shitters not only sounds like a logistical oversight, it sounds like it was left out on purpose. I assume this means they have amenities at certain places when they stop. Yes i saw the Tundra had an extra auxillary tank against the rear cab window and the Tundra had something like 30+ gallons of water but when i live in my camper on race weeks, even quick water conserving showers, washing hands and face after dusty work, you burn thru 50 gallons in less than a week as one person. I cant see 50'ish gallons lasting 10 people any sort of time if they were actually using it. Also what about their trash. 3-4 people per truck and no trash in any video? Living on the road requires a hefty amount of food stuffs to be brought, thats a lotta wrappers and such. Its hard to not make a ton of trash living in a vehicle for any length of time since everything is small, packaged, and serving size.
I realize they have done many of these expeditions and unfortunately i have not followed them or seen their stuff in the past. I assume at some point in some video they say something about their living situations such as showers and beds and baths.

    @Turd Ferguson @Airdam
I havent watch the most recent episodes but in an older episode they were saying that every so often when they were in a big city they would get groceries and stay at a hotel to shower and get some proper "comfort" before going back to the "adventure". If far from cities for a long time they would try to find a campground with amenities instead. Cant remember if it was every 3-4 days, every week, or something else.
Not sure if they still do it or not though.

I think they typically dig a hole to crap in and use dude wipes for a shower. On their longer trips they will stay at a hotel for a night occasionally but it seems like they go weeks without. Their earlier adventures were much more off-road based following and cutting old trails. They were more entertaining. Now they are mostly road warriors. A sprinter van would be fine for most of it.

it definitely gets bad if used*, shears out of viscosity over time (both from mechanical wear forces and fuel) and beomes acidic from oxidation and moisture. but yeah, a lot of the issue is just the soot and particulate that gets into it over time.

if you run good oil, a good bypass filter system (and lots of sump volume) like a semi, you can run a 20k+ mile oil changes.

*shelf life of an uncracked container is practically forever

you guys wipe? when did men become so soft

lots of heavy stuff that might rust.
VW says 10k oil changes for my 2 - TDi's right in the manual. My garage said a straight 'no, every 5k period' since I bought em. even with the addtional cost of non-coking diesel oil it is money well spent.

daily driving, carwashes and oil changes will keep almost any car on the road nearly forever.
