it didnt prevent Toyota keeping XREAS for 20 years despite multiple failures and most people replacing it without XREAS afterwards

toyota also has 15+ years of bad gas mileage and rusty frame data. what’s your point?

    So many assumptions.
    • Maybe Toyota collects data on the KDSS failure rate. Maybe they don’t.
    • How many vehicles are equipped with KDSS?
    • What is the failure rate?
    • What is the typical odometer reading at which the failures occur?
My point is that perhaps Toyota stuck with KDSS for so long because of the data. Not in spite of it. And unless we are privy to that data we won’t know which.

Disclaimer: I have driven 4Runners with and without KDSS and I am a huge fan.

Neither of those issues effect warranty dollars. Which is what @3JOH22A is referring to.

You're not necessarily wrong but you're not necessarily right either.
I understand that your just stating an hypothesis (like others do, after all we're on a forum to discuss about 4R stuff) and that you do not know the actual reason (probably no one really does, except maybe Toyota's inner circle).

With that said, it could be valid to think Toyota stuck with it because they deem it reliable. But also, like mentioned by others, it wouldn't the first thing that Toyota has kept and/or not fixed, even IF they deemed it unreliable (on the 4runner alone: xreas, rusty frame, needle bearing, software glitches, etc...)

Also, even if they knew of the issues, they could still really well keep producing and selling it as long as people keep paying for it. After all they probably spent a LOT of money in the R&D for this feature alone, so that alone would be an incentive to keep producing it regardless of the failures here and there.

PS: I'm not debating the technology behind it, just whether or not failure of KDSS would prevent Toyota for offering it in a truck that has been essentially the same from 2009 to 2024

Both gas mileage and frame corrosion protection have been fixed/improved with 6th gen, along with deleting KDSS

You know that steering rack that liked to leak, and the SAIS valves that liked to coke up? Both also designed out...

now that i think about it the successor to KDSS is only available on higher end model toyotas which does fit your idea of marketing for a certain class of owner.

though a toyota dealership's ability to service KDSS stems from the one specialized tool needed. which of course is probably not a good purchase if it is seldomly used for only one particular model in the entire line up. it makes sense that a lexus dealership would have since the models that feature KDSS is more commonly serviced.

i do believe it is market driven though. one of the toyota dealerships local to me has the ability to service KDSS because they have the hydraulic pump in house. there's also a toyota/lexus specialized shop nearby that can do KDSS.
