Sequoia doesn't look like a 4wd "truck" anymore. Looks like a giant car.

If the grand highlander gets much bigger it’s going to be the size of the sequoia

"So the Sequoia has headroom to grow even larger for the customers who mostly commute solo, then."

    -Toyota designers, probably.

The new model Y with the full light bar headlight and taillight is pretty annoying to drive next to too.

Never mind that. Think of the merchandising opportunities with special edition color matching 40oz Stanley tumblers!

My wife’s 24 Acadia is the same way. It looks like a baby Yukon, but the 3rd row seats are just in the way and don’t sit flat when folded down. It would be nice to have the option to not have a 3rd row.

There’s definitely at least 5 in the Southeast cause I saw one yesterday at a dealership in NC.

ETA: it is a nice looking color

My last car was pretty much as small as you can get with a third row (Sorento, last gen Acadia, Outlander) and it was quite nice to have.

For a vehicle just a few to several inches longer than the typical compact CUV you could carry more folks around town.

Sure, you won't be roadtripping (although you could if you strap everything to the roof or hitch tray) but it's perfectly fine for day activities and means fitting in one car instead of taking two more often when family and friends visit.

One of the arguments I see people make is "well the third row is for small kids and not really intended for adults so the lack of storage is fine". My response is always "so you don't have kids". LOL.

I don't get this logic or how it's supposed to be a zinger. Not having kids doesn't mean relatives won't plus sometimes you just gotta move a group of people around town greater than five because adults still fit back there. Not comfortably, but feasibly and legally.

I've had long items sticking out the rear window but that doesn't mean I should go sell my 4Runner and buy a pickup.

So true. I’ll be packing for a weekend of snowboarding with two kids soon and there is never enough space.

    Having kids comes with stuff
Have a baby, heck they're great why not have two. You'll completely convert the rear seating area into kids seats with either reverse facing car seats, booster seats ect. The rear hatch is completely full with strollers, bags including baby bags and emergency bags.
Get two kids, both in high school, both in some sort of sport where they have gear bags. The gear bag, school bag, lunch bag, and two kids will absolutely swallow a small SUV.
Kids have a lotta stuff, they fill up small SUVs quickly. If you have a 4door tacoma you will struggle with two kids. You need a small to medium SUV for two kids to travel back and forth to school and such. Got a kid in tournament ball? Whole family on a weekend trip to a tournament, two adults and two kids turns into "I need a Tahoe" very quickly.
    Three kids?
    Four kids?
You need a suburban, Yukon XL, Expedition max. Kids take up a lotta space.
Gotta family at the local church, great family, great dad, superwoman mom. They love having kids. They have 7 and have a 15 passenger Ford transit van with rear seat delete for all the stuff and say they need more room.

I think I see the disconnect here. I'm getting that folks are assuming that compact three-rowers will have the third row up all the time?

They'll be ill-suited for constant kids-AND-stuff duty but it doesn't mean the feature itself should be confusing or considered pointless.

For 1-2 kids it can get by with their things and you can pull up one or both seats for parents, friends when necessary.

Obviously not for crawling to Costco or cross-country - and this is very dependent on the individual family - but it opens up a lot more options in a package not too much larger than the usual compact CUV.

(and the only compromise in my case was that I lost out on some under-floor storage since this was when the Sorento came in both two and three row versions)
(and on a completely different tangent, I kinda wish I had the 4th gen's third-row setup - a couple seats I can stash in the garage and not permanently lose the vertical space in the cargo area but still have the option.)

When the Land Cruiser came out with those seats in the 90s i was like.... "wow thats radical and ugly" but.... Its very practical and easy to just rip them out when you dont need them. This is the same thing the 4th gen 4R got like you said. The rear seats flip up rather than down in order to keep the rear floor flat. The 1st gen Sequoia almost was the same but the seats folded down and forward against the 2nd row, and pulled out in just about 60 seconds. These ideas are great honestly, why not have a seat that can be there when you need it and pulled out when you dont.
Maybe.... Just maybe.... Its because people these days want simplistic and want it to fold down with a finger push of a button and dont want to manually pull seats out and clutter their garage 98% of the year with the seats.
The offroad community was similar on the early SxS, the early Rzr seats pulled out but didnt have a seat base that allowed them to be usable to sit on. Then Can-am came out with the commander and the seats came out and could be used anywhere to sit in, including in the bed or on the ground. If the rear seats were able to come out and then be unfolded and used as an extra bench in the workshop or garage, then they might not be wasted space.

He should just take the buses and trains since he cares about the environment more than anyone else here with exception of couple of other GreenBloods who refuse to give up their 5th gens.
