    Hey everyone,

I was hoping for a second opinion on a check engine light with the code P0453 High Evap Pressure Sensor. I am currently deployed so I cannot troubleshoot the issue myself so my wife took the vehicle to a local mom/pop shop for a diagnostic which came back to my charcoal canister needing to be replaced. On top of the $165 diagnostic fee, they quoted her an additional $900 for the parts and labor repair which at my local Toyota dealership they quoted $715 for the same action.

I just wanted to inquire a second opinion on if anyone has seen a charcoal canister go bad on a 4runner this quick? I would like to mention that it has sat with 14 miles in the fuel tank for 2 months. Not sure if condensation/pressure was built up. Thank you ahead of time for your analysis!

That sounds extremely odd for such a new, low mileage canister to fail. I think the main culprit to damaging one is overfilling the gas tank on a regular basis.

I feel the same way. We never overfill either and baby the vehicle hoping to keep it past 20 years. I can't help but think that they are taking advantage of my wife. After doing research; I found that the OME part cost $500 and even $355 in some Toyota dealers. She requested a parts breakdown and documentation of their diagnosis but she was denied.

Take it to the lower priced one, which sounds like your Toyota dealer. Tell her to get it done. Semper Fi!

Overfilling normally causes this code to trigger.
But then you mentioned the vehicle sitting for several months.
That could also be a causal factor.

    Am not an expert.
But I would clear the code. Run the gas tank almost empty.
Put quality gas and Chevron System Cleaner
Check for loose gas cap/replace gas cap.

UPDATE: The problem came originated from a rodent chewing a wire harness. The dealership quoted $4500 for the repair. Looks like I will be filing a comprehensive insurance claim.

^Did the dealer specify where the chewed wire was located? Was it above the fuel tank?

I was also thinking that if the fuel pump service bulletin had been performed, then maybe one of the evap lines didn’t get secured properly.

What's this fuel pump TSB you speak of? Does it apply to 2022 4Runners?

I no longer have a copy of the bulletin but see the attached link. Plug in your VIN and it should show you all the applicable recalls. I can’t remember what years were affected by the fuel pump recall. Mine was and dealership installed a new pump. No issues for me.
