    Hi all -

I am looking at a 2022 4runner premium with 11k miles for 43k. The carfax shows that it failed its emission test on 08/05/2022, but then passed it a week later. Is this something to worry about?

it's had two owners already as well.

    Thanks!

Hmmm…I would want to know if it was a bad test or issue with vehicle like bad O2 sensor. Bad O2 should show a code and check engine light. In SC we don’t do emissions tests. However, I’m buying mine in NC and the dealer said they must do safety inspection before selling it , which includes emissions test. I would like to know it passed as that could definitely affect resale if you needed to sell it.

You would be the third owner? And it's a 2022?

    11,000 miles and it's $43,000?

How much are new ones going for where you are? I would just go to a dealer and ask to see what 4Runners are coming in and pick one.

    Brand.

    New.

If the batter went dead or was disconnected, it could have failed for “incomplete readiness codes”.

This 4R has three strikes against it already - $43k (which isn't horrible, actually, but still close to new), 2 owners in 1 year, failed emissions test for whatever reason. I'd look elsewhere. Unless you just can't live without this one for some reason.

This is correct except it doesn't set codes so to speak. The engine controller does a series of self tests that occur under various operating conditions. If the vehicle doesn't meet the parameters/enabling conditions needed for the test it wont run and any uncompleted monitor will cause a fail upon an emission tests. And no the "Check Engine" light will not be on. Other than a battery disconnect as an emissions repair tech I can tell you 99% of time when a newer vehicle fails with no engine light on it's because the emissions tester did not have vehicle at full operating temp. You can't drive it from the parking lot into the garage and test it for it will fail. There are set procedures in place ensure operating temp that sadly don't get followed. Catalytic converters need be around 600 to 800 F for them to function with a fuel system in "closed loop" mode.

I wouldn't call multiple ownership a red flag. History will always tell a story. My used 3 year old 4R had two owners before me - within 16K miles. It was purchased/traded twice with the same dealership and the reason each time was because of the poor fuel economy and rough ride. :notsure: Both times were for Highlanders.

This right here. Even in a strict state like California, a failed modern emissions test isn't a red flag and 99.9% will be resolved.

Maybe the previous owner installed a catless Y pipe.

haha that's a different story. but if the failure is due to something like that I wouldn't call it a red flag. maybe a correctable feature.

My dad's 1996 Nissan Pathfinder failed an emissions test in 2007 just because of a hole in the exhaust. No CEL on or anything. I would be more worried about the fact that's had two owners in one year than the fact it failed an emissions test. On another note, in Pennsylvania where I live, a CEL will cause a vehicle to fail inspection regardless of what it's for...

I think the answer is to move to a state that doesn't have inspections! My friend had a 2009 Pontiac Vibe that wouldn't pass emissions here in PA due a bad catalytic converter. This was his commuter beater that he planned selling soon so he just registered it at his parents' house in South Carolina, where there is no emissions testing, instead of paying $1,600 for a new catalytic converter.

Still trying to figure out how to respond to individual messages on this forum.

Thanks for the help everyone. We passed on this one - I think we will look for a new 2023 for just a few grand more.

    I'm in the market too.

For those of you who say "buy new" - it's not quite that easy. Firstly, the dealers are not selling them without a ton of added accessories and packages to jack up their profit. if you look on the Toyota website (under search inventory) - you'll see that an SR5P is selling for over $50k and regular SR5 for just a couple of k under that.

Also - they are all "in transit".

$43k for that year and mileage is right on par (and, under) what I'm seeing. There are ZERO for sale at MSRP.

So - for some "quick math" -

    a $9k difference in price / 11k miles = just under .82c per mile.

I don't like the situation (at all) - but, I'm going through the same issues trying to find one where I'm not getting bent over on pricing.

I mean - $9k would buy you and entirely new engine or transmission. The price difference isn't trivial.

TXLutzy: There are ORPs for sale now at Town and Country Toyota (Charlotte, NC) for under 50k. I have one due in 3 weeks. There is a Silver Metallic one with moonroof for under $48k. That does not include tax or $899 doc fee. I know exactly what you mean about all the add-ones but this dealer cut all that out for me. You can buy at factory MSRP + tax +$899 doc fee

THANK YOU. I will make some calls.

Unfortunately, my F150 is STILL at the dealer for repairs (tomorrow is day 28). I don't mind a flight and drive back if I can get a good deal.

    Thanks for the heads up!

I am so glad to live in a safety only inspection county now that I no longer have my inspection license.
My 2007 Tundra has had reoccurring evap codes for a few years and this has saved me each year.

New is the way to go, unless it’s an amazing deal. There are some dealers left out there that don’t charge markups or add on a ton of accessories. There are even some that sell at invoice right now. You just have to look really hard and find that unturned stone. There may also be a wait for those that are priced fairly. You may find one in transit or on the lot, but timing is everything.

Just put in a 1k deposit for a 2023 sr5 premium with sunroof and 17inch trd pro wheels (black) and a few more random add-ons for $47,485 including the delivery processing and handling fee. I think this is a better option considering it is brand new. Thoughts?

That's pretty much today's market, as far as cost. I would have done the same - buy new, that is.
