2022 KDSS vs 2023 NON-KDSS

    I have a couple of questions guys, and I was just wanting to get some opinions. I can get a new 2022 TRD Off Road Premium that has KDSS that is available or a 2023 TRD Off Road Premium without KDSS that is also available. Both are available at MSRP, and both within a few dollars of each other price wise. Just curious as to what you guys would do. Get the newer model year even though you are not getting KDSS, or take a new 2022 with KDSS? Am I missing anything by not getting the 2023? Thanks in advance.

    I'm an idiot but I would go with a 2023 model since it has a slightly resale price when you go to sell it down the line. Not by much. Just depends on how much you care about KDSS

    With my driving experience since I like to mod my 4Runner I pick non KDSS even if KDSS was available for 2023 :)
    IMO all depends on individuals liking. Just like asking do you like Army green vs Lime green.

    If you get KDSS please please make sure to remove the cover and clean to avoid trouble. Its been months I have to clean my buddy's.

    Do you want KDSS? That's all that matters. If they're both new, get whichever one you prefer.

    KDSS has some cool advantages. But, depending on the level of modifications you want to perform, it can end up being a limitation.

    I guess that is what I am really trying to decide. If I want KDSS or not. In all actuality, probably leaving it stock no matter what I get.

    I'd say - drive both and decide.

    I would get 2023 if it has heating steering wheel or color you like. I didn't take my new KDSS truck to a serious offroad yet, slight off camber situations I had didn't feel better for me, but overall I feel that KDSS made ride a little bit firmer and eliminated lean on sharp turns. I've seen reports that after few years (5 to 10) KDSS tends to rust and might need expensive fixing. Also KDSS make some mods harder like a lift for example. I drove 2010 SR5 for 11 years and now I have 2022 TRD Offroad with KDSS and with my driving style and truck usage I wouldn't probably pay extra for KDSS. I'm sure that for people who love sharp cornering KDSS might be a selling point though : )

    Doesn’t mileage factor much more into resale value than the model year?

    That said, if 2023 turns out to be the last year of the 5th Gen, and the 6th Gen is less capable or otherwise considered a downgrade, there could be some merit in the idea that the “last year” of the 5th Gen might command a higher resale value.

    Not easy at all to decide. Driving stock suspension KDSS vs stock suspension non KDSS vs better suspension non KDSS way different feel.

    I just laugh when people try to speculate future resale value when deciding on a brand new vehicle.

    You hurting that much you need to feel comfortable to get more money back when you sell you spending too much to start.

    From what I gather, from talking to dealers in the states, the heated steering wheel is not available. Correct?

    If you are planning to keep it stock, I would definitely drive both and then decide. That is what sold me on KDSS.

    I just got 2023 Off Road with KDSS. It is fantastic for cornering on pavement. Haven't done any serious off roading...just ripping down gravel and dirt roads. It was stellar. Mine has a heated steering wheel (I believe it is the only difference from a 2022?). The heated steering wheel is great (as the mornings get colder).

    What do you think goes for more?

    In 2028...a 2022 4Runner with 100K miles or a 2023 4Runner with 100k miles?

    I think a 2022 with 80k miles will be worth more than the 2023 with 100k.

    Obviously, if all else is equal, the newer vehicle will get a little more money. But, it will be less of a factor than mileage and condition.

    Also, the older one has an option the newer one doesn't.

    There’s also a good argument to be made that an unmodified vehicle will have a higher resale value than a modified one.
    A. Off-road modifications suggest a higher likelihood that the vehicle has been driven roughly. If I were looking for a used 4Runner I’d be looking at the gently driven mall-crawler rather than the heavily modified trail boss that has seen thousands of miles on the trail.
    B. We all like to customize our vehicles to our own tastes.

    Absolutely.

    But in this case OP has a chance to buy either 22 or 23. I'm assuming he puts on the same mileage on whichever vehicle he decides to move forward with.


    @Thatbassguy correct. In my original post I mentioned OP would see a slight advantage in resale value if he moves forward with a '23.

    I had a 5th Gen non-kdss so I know how they drive, but I have not had a chance to drive the one with kdss.

    I’m not an expert on off-roading by any means, so my opinion is probably different from a lot on this forum. I’ve owned six 4Runners over the last twenty-five years. The only two I miss are the 1986 and our 2015 Black Trail with KDSS. I bought the 2015 and after it was paid off, we bought a 2018 and my husband took the 2015. The newer one was an SR5 without KDSS and I noticed the difference right away. I’ve always missed that Trail with KDSS, so when my husband wrecked it, I made sure whatever I replaced it with would have KDSS. I passed on an Army Green Trail (which I really wanted) because the Trails no longer have KDSS as standard. I ended up with another silver one and I was only happy to award my husband that SR5 for his carelessness (he actually doesn’t care, he says any 4wheel drive can do most casual off roading if you know how to drive it.)

    So, to echo many opinions here, if you want a good daily driver that you’ll leave stock and only go off-road on the weekends to have fun, not conquer Moab, the KDSS is the best.

    there's off roading and off roading. So it depends on what OP does more:
    off roading as in driving on a dirt road= better with NO KDSS (or installing an aftermarket switch to disable kdss) as kdss will make the ride a lot stiffer
    off roading as in rock crawling or going really slow over obstacles= better with KDSS (slightly more articulation I believe?)
    on road= kdss gives better handling

    from what I understand for MY2023, limited, trd pro, and the "premiums" do come with heated steering wheel in the US. The other trims do not?

    Don't quote me on that, but that seems to be the consensus around here, although I would definitely make sure the dealer is aware of what you want if this is important to you.
    Most dealers in the US don't know much and did not have a clue that heated steering wheel existed for MY2023
