Was this at cold start? Any HVAC running? 4runners have loud, clackety sounding engines but that seems exceptionally loud to me (through phone speakers).

Sounds normal to me. These motors are very reliable but aren't the quietest and can be a bit ticky when cold. I wouldn't worry about it.

Normal. My Tacoma did it and now my Runner does. The 4.0 is loud.

My 21 TRD ORP same noise loud as hell checked a lot of 2021 4 runners all sound the same. This is the only thing i hate about my runner every thing else i love went to the dealer a few times to have the noise checked & documented just in case something happens to the motor. I’m going to use thicker oil next oil change to see if it makes any difference

It’s a noisy engine. What oil are you using? Some people are using synthetic 5W-30 and report that it’s quieter.

Yep, we’re running diesels or at least sounds like it:anonymous:
    Mine sounds the same.
Had a new Ram 6.4 that sounded bad-rough as well. There’s a huge thread on HDRAMS about it. In that case it was narrowed down to the cats amplifying the engine noise.
In this case I think it’s the injectors

I got rid of my 2018 off-road due to some disturbing engine noises at cold start. Made videos and dealer heard it on my vids but low and behold they were unable to replicate the noise after my taking it in 3 separate times and leaving it overnight.
When it got close to the end of the warranty I decided to part ways with Toyota. Having had to have a faulty oil pump replaced in my 2015 Tacoma at 1500 miles as well as a laundry list of clutch problems, decided to take a Toyota break.
Couple terrible service with mechanical issues and rising prices. I’m not coming back to the family for at least a few years

My 2020 tundra is loud on startup as well. My 4runner was also. My 2005 Tacoma with 300k on it is the quietest of them all. Drive it and don’t worry.

Still just sounds like a normal 4.0 to me. I'm sure there is some variance between motors and maybe you got one of the noisier ones, but it doesn't sound broken or sick.

After listening to the video i was going to say sounds like the loud/noisy oil pump issue that the Tacoma's went through in 2015. There was a big thread about it over on tacomaworld. my Aunt had it on her 2015 Tacoma, my 2012 Tacoma didn't have the noise and was quiet.

Your 4Runner is going to blow any minute now!

Sounds about the same as my 21 ORP and a hell of a lot quieter than my 18 Tundra Limited. The Tundra does clatter like a diesel sometimes.

The sound would have to be a lot worse than yours to make me want to trade it in, or run to the dealership in a panic.

I have a 2006 Tacoma with 4cyl 2TR-FE engine and it makes all sorts of knocking, clicking, and whirring noises that come from the engine and transmission (5 speed manual). I almost didn't buy it because of this in 2011 at 18,000 miles, but it's now at 170,000 miles and it still sounds the same, and I'm still on original clutch . This kinda taught me that Toyota drivelines aren't the most refined or quiet, but they're quite reliable. Your videos sound like normal engine sounds to me.

The 1gr has solid lifters, which is the reason for the ticking sound. They sound like garbage at idle. It's normal.

I can't really tell from the video if yours is louder than normal or not.

Given the market for used 4Runners, you could probably sell it for really good price right now.

Could very well be the pump.
I accept that Toyotas are noisy but when I hear mine making louder and more obnoxious noises than the other models that I’m around it bothers me. I have decided I may be a little to anal for Toyota for a while haha I have 5 in a row and loved the first three, the last two, well- eww
