I have a 2020 TRD OR with factory entune infotainment system. The audio has been turning off at startup , or maybe when I shut the vehicle off. I can be listening to audio, then turn the vehicle off, and the next time I start the 4r, the infotainment center will display audio off. I’ve reset the infotainment center and also reloaded updates. No change. Curious if anyone else has had this issue. I’ve done several searches but come up empty handed.

That's odd. It sounds like you have an electrical short or a short in the head unit.

I’ve ran the system diagnostics on the head unit and all checks out there. It never shuts off while I’m driving, only after the ignition has turned off. And it doesn’t happen all the time. The head unit is on and functioning, but the audio will be turned off, like when you push the volume button in. All the speakers work, I’ve reseated all the connections on the back of the head unit. No trouble codes anywhere. I have a second battery and a red arc bcdc, also added a redarc brake controller, but radio has been doing this since before those mods. Nothing else has been modded electrically. I have extended full Toyota warranty so can bring it in to the dealer easily enough if I need to.

Mine does that after using Android Auto to listen to music. The next time I start the 4Runner the stereo is off, and when I turn it on it goes to FM instead of XM. Only happens after using Android Auto. I don't remember that happening before... Seems recent. I wonder if an update was pushed.

Interesting. I normally have my iPhone plugged in. I’ll have to see if the problem continues if I don’t have my phone connected.

I went through probably a dozen starts and stops today without my iPhone attached to the usb port, radio worked flawlessly all day. I have a new iPhone 16 pro, I was having the same problem with my old 12 also. Now I’m wondering if it’s an apple play thing, an entune software issue, or a usb port thing.

Ok so when I unplug my phone from the usb port, when usb/carplay is the source, the radio changes to audio off, regardless if the vehicle is on or off when I unplug the phone. Is this normal behavior? I remeber the source always switching to whatever source was active before CarPlay was active.

I'll check mine and see if it acts the same. I don't use Android Auto much but I do charge from the USB. I'll check it out later today and see if turns off after disconnecting without Android Auto being used.

Thinking back I did replace the 4runner battery a couple of months ago, and it was off the battery for a couple of hours at that time. Maybe a setting on the head unit defaulted after being off the battery that long. I don't recall it ever doing that before, though. In the past it would just revert back to the previous source, which is usually XM for me.

It's not the end of the world, but it is annoying.

If the phone is just plugged in and charging the audio stays on when phone is unplugged, it’s only when the source is the usb/phone that audio off happens when unplugged. I’ve looked in the settings of my phone and the entune system and have not found anything that might cause this behavior. I’ve also deleted my phone from the entune and the entune from car play in my phone. Need to try playing music off of a usb stick also then maybe my next step will be a factory reset of the entune.

Apple just pushed out a new update that addresses Air Play issues.

I can confirm my acts exactly the same with Android Auto. I tried everything to see if the head unit would revert back to a previous source after disconnecting Android Auto. No joy... It just says 'Audio Off.' The manual didn't really lend any help. It did say if you disconnect the phone the audio would stop, but it made no mention about reverting back to a previous audio source.

I guess I just never noticed it before because I never really use Android Auto for audio that much. I bought my '20 new and you'd think I'd have noticed this before, but no.

It makes sense, though. If you pick Bluetooth and play audio and then disconnect the Bluetooth, you'd have to select the next audio source. It follows that Android Auto would do the same. My take is this is by design.

I did discover that even with the audio off you can tap the screen and pick a source, and it will start playing. That's a little easier than pressing the power button and then surfing menus for the audio source.

Thanks for checking yours and confirming. I was certain when mine was new it would revert back to a broadcast source. First thing to go is memory I guess. It’s annoying nonetheless. I’ve never used the Bluetooth, that was a great troubleshooting step i missed.
